Mandrel Budget Y-pipe- annoying noise fixed!
My mandrel-bent Budget Y-pipe was making an annoying vintage VW Beetle type noise, with a bees in a can noise at high speeds (Yes, my pipe made 2 distinct annoying noises
). The noise was sourced to the unlined flex joint (aka flex section) Budget uses.
The noise was so obnoxious to the point that I did not accelerate more than 1/2 throttle and at a very slow rate to prevent the noise from occuring, which made driving very unsatisfying.
I tried header wrap because it was the cheapest solution + its a do-it-yourself job and it wasn't much of a help. The y-pipe noise is too high-pitched to be muffled by the header wrap. The only solution - with the exception of trashing the pipe- for me was to replace the flex joint.
I obtained a lined flex joint from Warpspeeed. Dallas was very helpful and also gave me a couple of pipe sections for the ends of the flex joint which was definitely needed (thanks!). My muffler guy replaced the flex joint and now the Y-pipe is quiet. There is a hint of exhaust rumble at idle- which i like-, but no annoying noises at any rpm, any rate of acceleration, any speed. Its like stock. The lined flex joint is the solution.
If your Budget y-pipe is making bees in the can/VW beetle type noises and you can't live with it then I recommend you to replace the flex joint. You can obtain one from Warpspeed. Make sure you let them know its for a Budget y-pipe, so he'll give you a couple of extra length pipe pieces because the unlined Budget flex joint is longer. Remember its 2.5in diameter.
My once $165 USD Budget price is now a $245 USD y-pipe. I wish I went straight to Warpspeed instead of dealing with this BS.

i really wanted the budget but now i am leaning towards a warpspeed because of this d*mn noise problem
has covering the flex section with header wrap worked for anyone?? i dont want the noise but the price of budget's y-pipe is so hard to ignore

oooo..... a quiet Y-pipe.. something i've been looking for! So it does depend on the brand of Y-pipe u get?? (noise-wise). Also, i have catback, so would that in combination make it louder? louder nois meaning the kind u can hear INSIDE the car w/ the window up (y-pipe resonating against interior cabin)

I have the new budget y-pipe bought on group deal and after 1000 miles on the pipe the beetle noise is much lower than it was when first installed. I no longer hear it at all after turning up levels on the bass tubes...
I had same BS VW noise!
