What does it mean when my clutch starts squeaking??

I know i'm a newb, i'm barely turned 18 so i don't know that much about cars. Still learning. But I'm almost at 100,000 and i just got my 97 Max 5 Speed 2 weeks ago. So i don't know that much about Max's either. Well lately my clutch has been squeaking while i'm in 1st gear and i hear it a little in 2nd. What does this mean? And if i need a new clutch, which would be the best to get. Thanks.

my clutch doesn't squeek, but something underneath squeeks when i press and let go of the clutch pedal. I'm guessing something needs to be lubed.
can you clarify where your squeek is coming from? oh yeah, i have a 97 gxe. My gf's 95 altima se 5sp also squeeks in roughly the same place as my max. I've lubed everything I could short of taking the tranny out/apart and nothing's helped.

I had the same problem just last week and my mechanic had me pump the clutch and he lubed something under the hood. There's no more squeak and the clutch feels lighter. I wish I could be more specific and tell you what he lubed but at least you know it's nothing serious.

In a search for "clutch" AND "squeak", I found this from DBM, among others:

This squeak is probably not a symptom of a problem. It is a nuisance, an annoyance, but nothing more. However, if you want to silence it, you could apply some oil or grease to the tip of the pushrod where it presses on the outer end of the clutch release lever. There is a good photo of these parts in the Haynes repair manual, page 8-3. If that doesn't get rid of the squeak it is probably coming from inside the clutch housing... the ball stud upon which the release lever pivots or the clutch pressure plate itself. These parts are not accessible without removing the transaxle. You may have to "just live with it".

If you ever replace your clutch you should carefully lubricate four points on the clutch release lever. See the photos in Haynes, page 8-6.

Seems there may be a few culprits. What sucks is in mine, the squeak is met with a little feel in the pedal right near the point of engagement...and I believe my to bearing is gone, because I get vibration/rumbling in the pedal anyway....combine those two and the max's fairly shallow release window, on 90+ degree days, it's not easy to start off smooth.

Was he in the hood or under the car when he lubed?

Under the hood.....
I can give him a call and ask him what he lubed if you'd like.

I think you mean the pilot bearing, which will "squeal" if it is not lubricated properly, but replacement shouldn't be a concern until about 150K miles. Just grease it up real good the next time you replace the clutch. Replacing it isn't expensive, but getting it out of the flywheel can be a bi-atch.

Nissan clutch pedals squeak - fact of life. To fix it you need to replace the bushings in the clutch pedal assembly. Oiling it is a temporary fix.
