Maxima Trouble Statring in Cold? Remote start 2001

I think this is a great forum.
I have a 2001 Maxima and this morning it was about 26 degrees in Charlotte, NC.
I tried my remote start (third party) and it had trouble starting. Had to try it a few times.
Granted I had the heating on high and the front defogger on. But this is normal for me and the car had no trouble starting in the past. But it was colder this morning than it had been. I want to of course leave these on as I have no garage and the goal is to warm up the car, melt any frost, etc...
Any ideas?
Perhaps when cranking the gas pedal must be depressed?
Perhaps the starter was not held in the on positoin long enough with the remote start?
All ideas appreciated.
Thanks, Peter
