2k2 vs Golf 1.8T

Finally got to shut my buddy at work up yesterday. He's got a 2K Golf 1.8T (not GTI, only year they made the 4 door with the 1.8T) and he's always been making round-about cracks about the Max, saying he doesn't like such big "boats" and prefers small quick cars.

So yesterday, we were on our way to visit a client and we hopped on the local highway. There's a portion where this first highway ends and links up with another highway.

This portion is beautiful because its two lanes that make a nice left hand curve to hook up with the other highway, there's no where for cops to sit, and most people go the other way (towards downtown) so there's usually little traffic.

My buddy loves this corner and is always talking about how fast he can take it in his Golf.

So we're cruising down this first highway, with me behind him when we hit this portion. As luck would have it, there are no cars in front of us, so I drop to forth in anticipation. As the last of the cars split away to head downtown, he guns it.

I floor it, catch up to him, and pass him in short order. It took me about 10 to 20 seconds to pass him with him going all out. Not really fair, considering the 100+ hp advantage. I keep pulling away for a bit just for fun, then slow then to let him catch up for this curve.

He gets in behind me, we hit the curve and I step on the gas. Couldn't keep up worth a damn.

When we got to our destination and suddenly he was all praise about the Max. He's like "didn't think it was THAT fast" and "it handles really well for a big car". I said "you realize my car only weights 300 lbs more than yours?" He was stunned. He was sure the Max was in the 3500 lbs range.

Later, back out our office, I caught him checking out the Nissan website. Might have a convert.

Would have passed him faster if you dropped to 3rd (unless you started at 90 mph?!?).

I'm not promoting reckless driving, but I'm glad at least one of those f-ing Fast and Furious wannabes has been shut up. It seems like all of the sudden everyone thinks that if they have a 4 cylinder, it means thier car is a feather-weight and thus fast as hell.

I have the video of the 2k2 6spd max with intake against a chipped/exhaust 1.8T in a few runs. It is very very close and could go either way. Barely a car length if that from a dead stop and highway run.

My friend has 2001 Audi A4 1.8T chipped, I raced him in my 2000 SE 5-speed and we were pretty close.
In 2002 Maxima now he doesn't stand chance. But his car is fast, I drove it and it sure pulls when that boost kicks in. Chip is a great mod for those cars.

I think that might be it:

From a dead stop with even starts the max is ahead by 3/4 of car at the top of 2nd. After that it is hard to tell the lead the Max has.

On a roll the Max only has a one car lead after about 6-7 seconds. Again after that it is hard to tell.

To me 3/4 - 1 car lead is very close especially in street races.

I have both my 2k2 Max and our my new GTI 337 (1.8T)

I will be putting a chip in the 337 this spring along with some other simple turbo work. I know that car will blow my 2k2 away with ease. That is why my 2k2 will have some other stuff in it as well. There is no way my max will lose to the GTI if I have a say.

Now looking at that guys Dyno, WOW 362hp on a little car like that. That is no joke. But he is straight stage 3 with some serious mods.

That would be me vs the 1.8t in the video
i had intake, and the golf had Intake, exhaust, chip, shortshifter

the video is misleading. i won by about 3-4 cars.
I ran him a week later after that and i pulled 5-6 cars on him after launching a little better.\

Don't kid yourself, the Golf in that video is big $$$ and represents ALOT of engine modifications. While the 1.8T certainly is a strong motor with lots of potential, you're changing alot of stuff to hit 400 hp at the crank.

Having said that, the car in the video is freaking awesome! I'd love to have the cash to buy a used 1.8T and do this. Too bad there wasn't an AWD version of the 1.8T sold in North America.

Even once you chip you're 337, I don't know that you'll be "blowing away" 2k2 6-spds. There's not that much weight difference between the cars, and the torque curve on the VQ35 is almost as good as the 1.8T.

Per the video of the 2k2 vs the chipped 1.8T, the 2k2 was still the victor.

Dood, I am no rookie at this hook-up thing. I have seen simple cars sleep on the side and serve everyone their own a$$. I have a 2k2 6spd and I have a 1.8T. Yes the weight is close, but if you have ever spent time racing on the road... 200 pounds can make the diff. between passing and losing.

not to mention the stack wieght of the max is listed. It doesnt include the leather, spare, etc. There is more of a weight difference than you think.

I know for sure that this 1.8T has more potential then the Max does. Sadly it is true.
