Sweet deal by Sears..

I just found out that the local Sears Automotive here in town rotates your tires for free!!!

Here's what happend:

Me: So, uh, how much for a tire rotation?
Dirty Mechanic: It's free.
Me: Yeah right. What do I have to buy.
Dirty Mechanic: No, it's just free.
Me: Have you been drinking used motor oil?
Dirty Mechanic: No.
Me: *scratching my head* Ok. Where do I sign?
Dirty Mechanic: Just drop off the keys and we'll have 'er done in 10 minutes.
Me: Nice.

I ended up buying an oil filter because I felt bad. Oh well, can't beat that.

if they rotate tire for free, are they still responsible if they mess up your wheel?

I wouldn't trust Sears to handle my rims. Sears and NTB are the same.

Same here, especially over a 20 minute job.

Hell, my car has never been to a shop period!

sure, but its up to you to prove it and fight that battle against a big company, not worth it. Spend $20 on a jack and stands and do it yourself right!

Sears really wanted to put my Diehard in when I bought it this summer. I let 'em (oddly enough the guy that sold it to me used to work with me, back then he had a 97 SE 5-speed max w/juicy juice) since that's not a very complicated operation...but yea, esp if you have rims, I dunno if I'd spring for an offer like that. It's pretty easy to rotate ye ole tires.

i got some niche shocks RIMS and i just installed them myself. Do they have to be directionally installed? Whats directional tires. ALl i have to do to the wheels is put them on right, they are alreasy balanced. Because i kinda feel a little vibration when on the freeway 101, is it because of the low profiles, or is there something wrong with the way i put it on. I mean, its not really shaky but a littel shaky. Do i have to put the tires in a specific place or order?

Yeah, you should have done the tire rotation yourself. It's very easy.

The time only I would take my car for tire service is if I need to put some new tires on the wheels. I don't think any of us have the tool to do that. Then you have to get them balanced.

Directional tires are tires that have a tread pattern that are made only to rotate in one direction. Most highly profile tires are made this way. If they are installed incorrectly, you will notice a significant difference and tread wear. Also, they must not criss-cross when rotation time comes. They must be rotated from front-to-back or vice versa without criss-crossing. I always buy directional tires. I think they last longer, and also they make the car handle better, too. As far as paying some tire company to rotate my tires, I usually WATCH them and let them know exactly what I want done to the car. I also let them know to stay CLEAR AWAY from my paring brake cable. I paid too many times in replacing this cable from them jacking up the car ripping my cable!

I just take the wheels of the car and drop them off at the tire place.

You guy aren't thinking!

If I scratch, screw up my rims or drop my car (yikes) while I’m rotating my own tires, I have to live with it.

Now, while I sit back, sip free coffee and watch Sears rotate those bad boys for me, they screw up just a little bit, I get a new set of rims.

Point in case: My buddy at IU took his Accord to the local Sears to get his new Yokahamas put on his 17” Konig Monsoons. Well, you can guess what happened. Small scratches on the outside of the rim (albeit, 50% of them were already there).

He just went to the manager and explained the situation of how the mechanics agreed to do a job that apparently they couldn’t handle. Next thing my buddy knows, the guy reaches in the register, pulls out $800 large ones and says that should take care of it.

For those of you with curbrash...don't get any ideas.

but for the alignment your car needs to be on the rack...no way around it.

When you guys rotate your tires at home, do you use the spare, or do you jack up the whole side of the car?

The place I bought my tires from offered free rotation with the purchase. I take advantage of it and use the excuse "I want to see what the brake pads look like." to be in the shop and watch them. They are pretty cool about it. I even got a nail in one of my tires and they fixed it for free. They should considering how much I paid for freaking tires.
