ACT NM1-HDMM Clutch on its way. MUAH HA HA HA!

HA HA HA HA HA! Ok, that's enough. Well, maybe a little more. Nah. Anyways, recently, clutch started giving me problems. About 2 weeks ago, clutch started slipping under hard use. I was doing about 40km/h, shifted into second, floored it, left foot was totally off clutch pedal. RPM's rose way faster than acceleration, clutch slipping. Funny thing was, felt MUCH better the next day. But ever since, it's been a slight slippage. It won't slip if I baby it, but if I start shifting aggressively, after the upshift, it slips, or if doing about 120km/h in fifth, and flooring it, it slips.

Finally made the investment, and ordered the ACT street/strip clutch. Should be here by the end of the week. I think I may wait a while before putting it in though. I want to totally eat up my original clutch before I have the ACT put in.

I'm thinking about putting it in myself, but I can't imagine how I'll be able to remove and reinstall the tranny without an engine lift. I may just end up paying someone to put it in.

I posted a while back on how long people's stock clutches lasted. But I doubt it, since I ordered the clutch like half an hour ago.

You don't need an engine lift, just your factory jack and a good rolling jack. I dropped mine and put it back in by myself (disclaimer, I don't recommend doing it yourself!) with just those two things... It may take a while to get everything lined back up, but it's not impossible...

I have a scissor style jack with wheels, but it doesn't roll to well on my driveway. I'm worried the tranny will fall off the jack when I roll it out from under the car. Plus, I need to have the flywheel resurfaced. What I was thinking about doing was renting an engine lift. I'd hook it up to the tranny from above, unbolt the tranny from the engine, and lift it out from the top of the engine bay.

With the cold temps coming (day time highs are slightly above freezing, night time lows slightly below freezing) I don't know how optimistic I'll be about doing this mod without the proper tools. We'll see.

A really good friend of mine's girlfriend's dad is a certified mechanic. He used to work for a Toyota dealership in the area. Eventually quit because he asked for a raise which he deserved, and didn't get, and started up his own shop. If I can get him to do the install for $300-400, like my buddy said he would, I'll definetly go to him.

I would go to your friend then, because you can't take the tranny out the top of the car, it has to come out the bottom...

How did you keep the tranny from falling off the jack as you rolled it?

Another reason why I don't want to do it myself is because I need to have the flywheel resurfaced, and I have no idea how to do that. Like is it as easy as cross hatching?

I had a pretty big rolling jack, so it was easy to balance. Actually, it was so big I had to lower the tranny onto a piece of cardboard and slide it out, because it wouldn't fit under the fender on the jack. As far as the flywheel, I just took mine to a machine shop and paid them $40 to do it.

You dont need a jack to roll off the tranny. I only did it the first time. Now I just get underneath it and wiggle it off and lower it onto myself. If you can bench like 150, you'll be able to do it. Its not really that heavy, it looks way more intimidating than it is. Ask meccanoble, he saw me take off teh tranny. Once everything is out of the way it takes only 2 mins to wiggle it off and another 2 to put it back on.

I'm a pretty big guy (6'1" 210 lbs), and I can bench about 160 plus bar, but I don't like the idea of benching a tranny. Too much can go wrong.

Umm. You can do more wrong dropping it on a jack than taking if off with hands. Trust me, ive taken my tranny off probably a dozen times.

Definetly, which is why I wanted to lift it using a lift. But now that I have found out that isn't possible, I guess I'll end up getting someone else to do it. Honestly, if it wasn't so cold outside, and I could guaruntee someone's help, I'd probably do it myself. Don't want to drop a tranny on myself with no one around.

You have nothing to worry about, seriously!!! I'm a little man I like 5'11 and only weigh if I'm lucky 150. I took that suck out...probably weighs about 120 or so. Anyway. once you take it off you can set it to the side while the car is still jacked up and have access to the clutch and flywheel! And if you drop the tranny on yourself it isn't to far of a drop won't really hurt anything. Just suggest you do it yourself because personally I don't think it is worth paying some mechanic like ~$150 dollars to do it.
