Cheap wheel upgrade
Cheap wheel upgrade
Hello all,
I am a new to the group but a veteran of the maxima. I have a 86 with 230k. Only mods are Tokiko blue struts, gutted cat (passes emissions) and a K&N filter. Anyway she (my maxima) loves to eat front tires...could be a sign I drive too fast. I would like to jump up to 16" or 17" rims and a wider tire but not break the bank. If anybody has any suggestions on what rims fit well or where to look it would be much appreciated.
Thanks...Mike

For cheap rims, the best idea is what Max88q said. Buy some "stock" alloys from a newer front wheel drive car like the Altima.
I think all of the front wheel drive sedans that use the same bolt pattern (also called 4x4.5) should fit. Hondas too if you want them. Be aware that some of them will have the make of the car stamped in the center, so it would be best to not have an H on your Maxima's wheels!
Once you decide on some wheels that you like, try looking on eBay. Sometimes you can find some and pay to have them shipped or just look for local auctions and pick them up yourself. that is also a little more safe to do.

I was looking towards getting the 16" 6 spoke rims from the altimas but they are hard to get here because noone with altimas here does stuff to it. I dont even think I want those anymore I have my eye set on the spec V's 17" rims but they are a grip from factory and also hard to come by here because I guess everyone likes their rims, unfortunately.

Forget about getting stock rims from other vehicles, they're expensive as hell. As male said, auto salvage yards charge a lot for basically used, beat up rims that don't really stand out anyways. Hell, most junkyards sell those sh*tty stock Delco radios with cassette decks for $100 a piece. You can get a cheap Pioneer CD deck from Walmart for that price.
As for getting SE-R rims or any rims from a brand new Nissan, you'll be looking at about $1000 or more. Dealers love to charge a lot for sh*t like that, because most people who would be buying them would probably only be buying one because of a bent wheel or something.
If you want cheap wheels, go to Sears and get yourself a decent set of American Racing or something in the neighborhood of $100-150 per wheel. I've got a set of 15" AR wheels on my car now (as you can see in the pic). I would have bought 16" or 17" wheels, but I had a decent set of 15" tires already on the car and didn't feel like shelling out more money for new tires at the time.
Now, if I had a brand new show car I'd probably go with a nice set of $2000 wheels, but I use my Maxima as a daily driver and those wheels get a lot of use and abuse, so if they get a little banged up I won't be so upset since I only paid $400 rather than $2000.

ROTAS, ROTAS..TRUST ME. Those wheels are the lightest out there for the $$, and they are about 145 each..You will notice a difference with light wheels, I know from experience..acceleration will benefit big time, as will handling. HEavy wheels really suck. I hade heavy KMC's on mine, swapped them on as soon as I bought it. I drove for a year like that, thought it was fine. Then I put my relatively light stock wheels back on, what a fantastic difference it made, especially acceleration. No more lead shoes for me. I see those big SUV's with 20's and laugh..the weight kills gas milage, handling, accelerationa AND worst of all, braking. Big time. Think about that the next time a pimped Denali with 22's comes flying up on your ***!
