2k2 Cougar V6.....my girl just got one today, pretty sweet ride......

I know this is kinda off topic, but itll be ight...my girl just got a loaded 2k2 V6 Cougar for around $16,400. She WAS looking at a used 2k SE auto max... but changed her mind and got the Cougar. Pretty sweet ride for the price....awesome perforated leather interior, silver colored guages, 6 disc in dash CD, and powered by a 170hp Duratec 2.5L V6. Whats your thoughts on this car? She wants to run my max with it when she gets it broken in......might be a good run, i heard they run high 15s low 16s stock auto also. It would bother me is she beat me kuz ya know its her car and not some punk *** with one thatll talk **** till they die. Anywayz..just thought I'd share my opinions about a pretty nice car for anyone who is thinking about getting something besides a Max.

Years ago the Ford Thunderbird was the same as a Cougar. I read an online survey that said the majority of buyers for the previous generation Cougar were female drivers. Not sure whether it is still the case for the current Cougar.

You talked her out of a maxima for a cougar?
No i didnt talk her out of a maxima, y would i do that?...she still would rather have a maxima but she said the peeps at the dealership werent even tryin to sell her the car...they acted like they could care less and stuff....so she went elsewhere, actually she was gonna get a 2003 Toyota Corolla S but the dealer sold the car she was gonna get the day before she was going to go buy it...so she said to hell with that too and then found the Cougar.

how old is your g/f? if shes under 25 then take a pic of her next to the new cougar & i'll give you my thoughts.........
Shes under 25........19 to be exact...

If an automatic cougar beats your max please don't tell us.

Well then, in that case, I think I speak for the rest of the .org members here when I say that you should DEFINITELY post a picture of the Cougar, with her draped across the hood!

Thank God for that! Poor girl, she will get to know the guys in service very well....Unfortunately, they are as dumb as the Nissan service techs, but they get a lot more practice due to the quality of the products they sell. I have had several New Ford products...let me tell you...they suck! Good luck to here...be prepared to be lending your car to her a lot

Hate to say it, but ***** is right. It's a nice peppy car with good styling, but the reliability has been horrendous on those cars, ranking dead last in Consumer Reports reliability guides.

That might not be a bad thing, though

Being there to drop her off and pick her up from Ford/Mercury service all the time will let her know that you're a good guy and that she can depend-on/trust you. Only good things will happen from that. And since she was the one that talked herself into the Cougar, you're technically absolved of all responsibility of her decision, since you were recommending a Maxima in the first place.

The engine on your Cougar will respond well to mods, but the auto tranny is a serious POS. There are plenty of sub 15 second V6 Contours/Cougars out there (unfortunately, they are all 5 speeds). They (Ford) are getting rid of that platform entirely, but it has nothing to do with performance. It will NOT hold any value for resale, but hey, not many American small sedans do. Here's a website for you to check out. These guys know a pretty good amount of mods and such. There are a couple of turbo Contours/Cougars running around (one has 290+ FWHP). Pretty nasty ride, that one. Enjoy the car, and hopefully you'll find the website helpful.

I like the interior. That's about all I can say. The exterior is lame, it's a Ford, and it's slow. There goes one car America won't miss.

I can't say this goes for the 2k2 Cougars, but the 2000 Cougar 5spd V6 did 0-60 in 8.9 seconds according to my consumer reports mag. I'm not saying that's dead on, but it gives a general Idea of this cars performance. She has an auto tranny however, so I expect a 1/4th time of 17.3 seconds if that. With all this being said, if you lose, I hope she gets to give your a swirly then punch your lights out.

The automatic 2.5 V6's are about a second slower 0-60 and 1/4mile than an automatic Maxima 2k-2k1. The 5speed would give a 2k-2k1 automatic a run for its money though, mid/high 15's.

Car & Driver did a comparison test between the Cougar V6 and the 6G Accord Coupe 4cyl and both cars had identical 0-30, 0-60, 0-100 and 1/4 times. Both were 5 speed models. That said, it probably cant run with ANY 95+ Max. (Ironically, the Cougar's predecessor car (the 2G Probe GT/MX6 LS) was somewhat quicker.)

Yeah, the last-gen Probe GT defintely feels quicker than these, handled better than the Cougar and had a better running engine, IMO. At least my '93 GT did.

My GF just purchased a new Cougar V6 and I've logged a few hundred miles in it to simply keep miles off my Max. IMO, the car is not very responsive and does not have much power for a V6. It handles corners a whole lot better than my Max, even with the suspension work, but that does not make up for the clunky feel of the engine nor the poor passing performance I found out about. The interior is OK, but the seats do not feel right to me.

Maybe it's just me? Kinda hard to compare it to my '02 Max!

You think a Consumer Reports time is an accurate judge of what a car is capable of?

No doubt...CR would get 7 seconds 0-60 in a Viper

Point well taken. Consumer Reports tested the 2K2 Max and derived a 1/4 mile of 16.X seconds!?! They must have ran the 1/4 in reverse, I guess.
