Intake question...

I know that a lot of people have used CAI's they have built. However, has anyone tried a form of ram-air induction? I mean, perhaps using the stock ait intake, but removing the top off of the filter, and fabbing a small scoop on the hood (look kinda like the turbo z31 of the '84 to '88 vintage) ? If so, would it be easier to mold the scoop to the hood, and form a gasket type seal around the filter so when the hood closes, it seals around it, or would it be easier to run like the old shaker style mopar hoods, with the scoop mounted to the filter assembly, and a hole cut in the hood, to permit the scoop to go through the hood, when the hood is closed? I was curious, as I found a decent looking after-market scoop that is small, and unobtrusive, and would be very subtle when installed on our cars...and just wondering if it sounded feasible...

well i my self dont have the $$$ yet to do a decent intake so all i have done is removed the top of the air box. there is a slight difference in power at higher speeds, low speeds its just loud and growling. sounds pretty nice.

Scoop.

Have you considered a cowl intake like the Chevelles had in the 60s and 70s and the Cavalier Z24? The cowl is a high pressure area because of aerodynamics. Just a thought, Might be a problem piping from the back of the hood to the filter bok, though. No Idea how the transverse 2nd gen is set up for that, the 1st gen would take some mods to get that done for certain.

I say go for the ram air. The airbox is bolted to the body, so you won't be able to shake much if you went and did the shaker style of ram air.

Just so you know....the scoops were on only the 84-85 turbos and they were in no way used for intake purposes. They only blew a bit of air down around the brake master cylinder and turbo area.

CAI is gonna be very little gain and could be made into a very time consuming and expensive project if you make it that. Keep it simple and cheap or you will be disappointed in your time and money invested.

I know the scoops on the z31 turbo were not for intake - one of my friends in HS had an 85 turbo...i was just looking for the look, and figuring it would be an original mod that would look good, as well as being functional.

I had thought of a cowl-induction style, but the plumbing wouldn't be fun...with this scoop idea, I could leave the stock air-box, etc...where it is, and just install a K&N panel, and then the scoop on top of that, to suck the air in...being higher than an inner-fender maounted CAI, and breathing much cooler air than a HAI, figuring it would be the best of both worlds. I do know that there would be little gains, but this would be a foundation to build on...get more air into the engine, and back out again...
