Racing slicks..weight issue as well?

Hi all, I have a question about racing slicks..

A lot of people mount these on the stock front steelies, but are there any lighter OEM steel rims on other cars that will fit a 4th gen as well? Also, since you have slicks, would it be better for the rim to be lighter, or the stock weight is fine for traction? I know i could go with small aftermarket lightweight rims but it's a money issue.

Thanks,
Mario

The lighter you can go the better. However its not easy to get a light wheel without paying big bucks. The mazda millenia is nice and light at 11.5 lbs but its only 6" and most slicks require at least a 7".

I am in the process of doing the same thing but haven't found a cheap solution yet.

There are expensive solutions ie Hart's etc but I am not ready to give in yet. I also want a set for the rear to get rid of the weight there too, and some nice light skinny tires to go with them.

Sometimes i wish our 4th gens were 4-lug. I see so many 14.5-15sec civics that have awesome 60' because of their lightweight cars and the small rims with slicks. Sometimes I think that Nissan definately didn't want aftermarket support for these cars.

Contrary to popular belief, wheel weight has nothing to do with traction, so don't make the mistake of thinking a lighter wheel makes for less traction, it doesn't.

Anyhow, Mazda Millenia wheels are very light but fairly narrow at only 6" wide. I know of at least 2 slicks that will fit on them though.

I run the BFG G-Force T/A drag radial in 225/50/15 on the stock steelies and they weigh in at 40 pounds total ... 2 lbs more than the stock tire sizes...but it works so I don't care...

My old 15" alloys ran 19 lbs.
My 205x45x15 Nitto 555r's weigh 17 lbs.
My 22x8x15 slicks weigh 11 lbs

Total of 30 lbs for racing but if I had 11.5 lb Millenia wheels the total would only be 22.5, but thats for this racing season.

Just have to find the wheels.

Hmmm maybe I should just lose 20 lbs, maybe I should do both. How about helium vs air in the tires?

Does anyone know if it's possible to fit 14" 5 lug wheels on my front?

Tried that Aaron, won't fit over the brake disk on 4th Gen. I was going to do that last year. Not sure on other gens though.

I don't think I want to go any smaller now anyway, we have one track that has a rough return road and I bottom out all the time so its pretty low. Lowering springs did that mostly though.

I also have to get someone lift up on the front fender to get the jack under now when the 22" slicks are mounted, so I can't change tires myself anymore.

I was able to find a set of 15X7 RX-7 rims (dunno what year they were from) that weigh no more than 15lbs each on eBay. Might be worth a shot to search for.
