How would you handle this?
I have had problems with my head unit since the day I bought it (Alpine 7894).
I have never been able to get the subwoofer control to work, and if you read a few of my recent threads, you'll know I've narrowed it down to the head unit pre-outs not working.
I spoke with the place I bought it from, and they say that Alpine has a policy of REPAIRING, and possibly REPLACING the unit, but they will have to take the thing out of my damn car to test it, and then of course, send it away.
Well, this doesn't really work for me. I bought it on September 17th, and had it installed at a reputable performance/sound shop. They didn't run the RCAs, so I did that.
It's now Feb 1st, and I've finally figured out why the problems existed (no need to before, as the amp/sub was being powered from my rear speakers, which I also didn't know until I went to install my new amp).
I maintain the position that I should get a brand new unit, and that I don't give a rats *** what Alpine's policy is. I paid $600 CDN for it, and I want a fully operational unit.
Do you think I should go in there with a "No-compromise, I want a NEW HU, and you can tell Alpine that" approach, or a "Fine, test it and have them repair it" approach?
I'm pretty damn ****ed, as you can see from a few other links

Anyone had experience like this (and worked it out satisfactorily)?

I personally love Alpine stuff. I must say that nothing has ever failed on me so I can't comment on their customer service.
Are you sure you ran the RCA's properly? I HIGHLY doubt the Alpine unit was a dud from factory.
I say remove it, give it to the shop to send to Alpine, and just wait and see. If Alpine decides to repair, I'm sure it'll literally be as good as new, and you'll be out nothing more than time without a deck. If they decide to replace, no biggie again, just time without a deck for abit.

The only hassle, I live 1.5 hours from work, so I depend on my radio to keep me entertained while I drive. It'll be boring as hell otherwise.

But yeah, Alpine is well respected.
Sin - truuuust me. Read my threads. I have done EVERY fix possible (that I'm aware of), and have narrowed it down. The shop is going to do some prelim. testing on Monday, and we'll see from there.

Don: tried two different types of RCAs (my Monster Cable ones, and the original ones I had in there - bought from the store that did the install). Neither works.
Thumpin: this is pretty much what I expect them to do, given that the HU was shot out of the box, and quite frankly, why would I pay $600 to get something that needed repairing?
Jmax: yup. Tried it with the AC tester yesterday, and no luck. Tried it at the ends of the RCAs running from the HU. Tried it directly to the pre-outs, and no reading (and I pre-tested on a AA battery as well).
Thanks again for the replies guys
