It's Decision Time.......sell max for turbo car ?

Well, I'm sure this has been discussed countless times, but it would still make me feel better to run this by you guys....

Sell the Maxima ? (93 gxe)

150,000 miles, recently rebuilt tranny, original engine.
lowered, exhast, rims, intake, fstb etc...
As of now, in great shape and showing no signs of breaking

AND

And buy a 300zx TT, 3000GT TT or RX 7 TT ?
(strongly leaning towards 300zx)
under 17,000 - M/T - Turbo ::::

OR

Keep the Maxima & hope it doesn't cost to much to repair

Could need new engine @ 200k mi? so far, it's running great but
u never know.. could cost $2k.

Could need another tranny rebuild @ 200k mi... could cost upto 2k.

Total repair cost in the future: approx. $5,000(over next few years)

Total cost of new car: approx. $17,000 (now)

What would you do?

jump into a turbo vehicle, your max has it's age and like you said "u never know" something could happen.

Depends on how your finances are. You buy one of those and you had better have at least a few thousand for repairs.

RX7 TT. Very fragile engine. Only VERY carefully taken care of examples last. Most don't. Add mods and maintainance is now 3x as important.

3000gt VR4: Transmissions cost over $5 grand. nuff said.

300ztt: turbos often need to be replaced(very expensive labor) and even routine work is a major pain due to the cramped quarters of that engine bay.

I'd mod something a little easier to work on IMHO.

like Jeff said it all about the financial situation...the cars you mentioned are all high maintenece, and man oh man a TT RX7 I wouldn't touch with a 20 foot pole unless my wallet was constantly full!!! nice choices though, but know what you are getting into

Logan, skylines are pretty hard to come by in the USA. lol.

Would be an excellant time to sell since everything is so new and working well.

If on a budget, I would look at Buick GNs, 240sx w/ sr20det or KA24 turbo kits, Mazda 323 GTX, Mazda 626 turbo, Ford probe turbo, Mitsu Galant VR4, Mitsu Eclipse turbos etc... If you want to spend some $, Audi 1.8T etc.

He can buy a Skyline you know. MotoRex will import an R32 for about $16.5k...

May not be an R34, but how many can say they own a Skyline???

Well, finances would not be a problem - I'd plan to cover for a rainy day.

But, I would expect that one of these TT cars would NOT have a major problem in the first 2 years I have it ..hopefully if pick a good one.

I'm more thinking about the future - the max wont last forever and I'd rather sell it now to get SOME money for it, instead of waiting till next year and get zilch for it.... it just sounds like a good way to play it right now..

What other cars would you guys recommend I should look into
for around 15-17k ?

curious

Just curious, have you considered heeping the max and getting a second car? could get one of the above, and then you would have two to work on, and should be able to have at least one of them running well all the time

Yep, thought about this - its gonna be hard to let the max go

But, I already have a couple backup cars from family (hondas )

And I would just ignore the max if I get a much nicer car ..

Plus, I MIGHT still have to deal with engine repair/tranny repair

if I keep the max in the next 2 years or so...

that's my biggest issue right now, I dont feel like spending

$2-3k on a max that's not worth that much?

That's the main reason I'd like to get rid of the max, getting too OLD to repair!

A Silvia project would be loads of fun. I would love to do that for myself, but I have to have something with four doors.

Personally if I had back-up cars in the family, and could do with a coupe, then I'd get the 3rd gen RX7. They are not going to be easy to find in decent shape, but well worth it.

Do your research tho, don't jump into a car without checking it out from top to bottom with a GOOD Mazda mechanic. There was an article in a recent SCC Mag with guidlines toward buying a 3rd gen RX7.

Or you can get an early S13 and swap in a SR20DET <-What I would do.

The 3rd Gen Rx-7 would be a good car since you wanna lose the max, but the's right, a 3rd gen is a sweet ride but it's a nightmare if it's not in good shop. A sr swapped 240 is pretty sweet as well, but it;s starting to actually become common! turboing the KA is more unique at this point!

The max is a good car to have for everyday driving. But since its a 12-13 year old car (my one is a 90 model), its starting to show signs of wear and tear (even though i just got the car in oct 02).

I'm probably selling mine but I posted before around august, but I'll just have to work out my finances around that period and see if I can afford a car that has turbo (perferably a skyline r33 for 16K-17K).

I'm willing to do up the car but finding parts here in australia is just a ***** (there are no maxima parts down heree in aus except for dealerships!!).

If you can afford a turbo car then do it (why do people want to install a turbo into the 3rd gen because they want a faster car!!), but remember, don't buy one that is unreliable.

well I'm still deciding if I'm getting a 98 passat or 98 maxima the passat has a 1.8t in it and with a GIAC chip you yield out 205hp and 253lbs of torque!!!to the wheels !! and the chip can be modified for any other mod you add...but like also the maxima...

pj93max- How about a DSM 1st gen (or 2nd gen) GSX can haul @ss and you can find them relatively cheap. I would stay away from the RX7 at all costs, even if it seems ok now you may be pulling the engine in a year $$$$$$$$$$. 300 TT would be a sweet ride too. Just be ready to put about $2000 in to whatever performance car you buy. Not saying it's always so, but more likely. Good luck.
