it's a hood support (strut?) most auto parts places have them, although mainly for domestics. If you can't find one there, you always have your local nissan dealership......

My hood struts are dead too and i think i remember hearing someone got some type of clamp thats sold at kragen or one of those stores, that goes on the hood strut and keeps the piston from moving and is made specifically for dead struts, i heard it was like 5 bucks. you might be able to find it if you search, they posted a picture of it too.

Do a search for it here and you find several posts relating to this. Advance auto parts sells them for $17 a piece don't last long but have lifetime warranty. Part #4525 I believe.

By the way, cold weather impairs the function of the hood struts, just so you know.

Strong Arm gas-charged lift supports model # 4524

You can get the from Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, etc.

just replace the hood struts, you don't want that 50 lb hood falling on your nugget

My hood lift struts failed also. I used to be faster than a falling hood. It hurt. Guess I'm getting old.
Once they fail, you cannot fix them. You have to buy new ones.

But, Hey. A Maxima is so dependable, you never have to open the hood anyway.

I bought new ones from NAPA auto. $28 each.
I used a 2 foot piece of 3/4 pvc plastic sprinkler pipe that I kept in trunk till I bought new ones. It worked good because it did not slip, and didn't scratch anything.

Don't buy new ones online if you can help it. Get lifetime warranty parts from a local parts store, so if they happen to fail again, you can get replacements hassle free.

Or leave it as is. It's fun to watch the full-service gas attendant get his skull crushed when checking your oil.

actually, that's a great spectator sport. I like to put money on how long it's going to take the attendent till he realizes that he's actually going to have to hold the thing, and that the struts are definitely broken. Usually, it's only once or twice, but some for some guys it takes 3,4 maybe even 5 times....but the only time that really happens is when you're in newark........
