My hood struts are dead too and i think i remember hearing someone got some type of clamp thats sold at kragen or one of those stores, that goes on the hood strut and keeps the piston from moving and is made specifically for dead struts, i heard it was like 5 bucks. you might be able to find it if you search, they posted a picture of it too.

My hood lift struts failed also. I used to be faster than a falling hood. It hurt. Guess I'm getting old.
Once they fail, you cannot fix them. You have to buy new ones.
But, Hey. A Maxima is so dependable, you never have to open the hood anyway.
I bought new ones from NAPA auto. $28 each.
I used a 2 foot piece of 3/4 pvc plastic sprinkler pipe that I kept in trunk till I bought new ones. It worked good because it did not slip, and didn't scratch anything.
Don't buy new ones online if you can help it. Get lifetime warranty parts from a local parts store, so if they happen to fail again, you can get replacements hassle free.
Or leave it as is. It's fun to watch the full-service gas attendant get his skull crushed when checking your oil.
