Hey Guys,

I having trouble starting my 1996 Maxima Se car in the morning after sitting in cold night and have to push on the gas pedal for the engine to start. I recently got my battery tested and is fine. Also, I had the spark plugs replaced too. I even went to Monroe Muffler to have my fuel injection clean. Still having the same problems. Lately, I was able to start my car in the afternoon when temperature is cool warm. I just called a couple of local Nissan Dealers and told them of my problems. Two of the dealers told me that it is normal for my car, but one of the other dealers mentioned I needed my fuel injection cleaned. What the heck is going on when all the service dealers are not on the same page. Is my problem the starter, throttle body, or something else I am not aware of? My family has a another 1996 Nissan Maxima and it does not have any problem starting. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

 

try this, leave it in the "ON" position(dash lights' light up, car is not on) for 15-25 sec and then see if it starts easier

maybe, maybe ur throtle body is super dirty and it need to be cleaned

 

i had issues starting, dont remember what fixed it, but i think it might have been some suer clogged injectors.

 

Three key things that will cause hard cold starts.

1) Dirty throttle body
2) Defective fast idle plunger or mis adjusted fast idle cam linkage
3) Engine Coolant Temperature sensor not within specifications when it's cold

Non of these things will throw a check engine light.


The Haynes service manual is your friend.

 

Thanks guys for your response. Hey Kevlo911, I even did what you suggested and it didn't work. Going to try to have the throttle body clean. Hopefully, that will help my problem. Thanks everyone.

 

I have the same problem. Hits and tries to start, but you have to open the butterfly to start.
Tried dealer diagnosis, but they found nothing and charged me $90.00 .
Had throttle body cleaned, no help.
The guy that said check the fast idle cam does not know that fuel injection does not have a part from a carburetor.......
My injectors are also clean and the thing runs perfect.
I suspect there is a sensor that's not working right, but is not looked at by the fault detector during cranking.
Unfortunately, there are so many, that it would be expensive trial and error to trouble shoot.

 

Excuse me, you'd better get your facts straight first!

The fast idle cam plunger is located on the throttle body down on the left side under the throttle linkage. It retracts when cold, opening up the throttle plate slightly. When the engine starts and runs, the coolant in the throttle body warms up the plunger & pushes it back out thus releasing the FAST IDLE CAM.

Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with our car's throttle system before you attempt to correct somebody.

Refer to a shop manual for precise settings of the fast idle circuit or use the scribed lines on the cam plate as a guide to set it up correctly.
