We know the stock rotors are pretty poor. Juttered at 25K, turned 'em, and juttering again at 37K. Time to change rotors and pads and I want quiet normal performing brakes that won't go jutters like with the originals.

I'm thinking about Brembo or Stillen cross drilled rotors and non-metalic pads. Maybe I should stick with the smooth OEM replacement Brembos. I hate to pay extra if cross drilled rotors are going to make noise, warp, or crack. What about the ability to turn down cross drilled rotors if they do warp? Does that work?

Who can comment on this? The main objective is NO JUTTERS with normal driving.

My mechanic has seen enough Nissan cars come by his shop to say that almost ANY rotor other than Nissan's is better for normal driving.

I don't race my car, so I don't need fancy rotors. I'm going to try to get Brembo blanks from www.nopionline.com. Blank vented Brembo rotors are selling for great prices there. I just hope they have them in stock.

I had my stock rotors turned at 15K, replaced at 20k. I also replaced front pads at that time and put R4S instead. No judder whatsoever and I'm on the second set of pads and put 25k more already. Friend of mine had the same trouble(judder) with his WRX and after he replaced just pads problem went away - on the same rotors. He put stock pads but different type. I have such feeling that it is pads who causes all these problems. I even read recently explanation that some pads left thin layer of iron carbon on the rotor surface causing the judder. That corresponds to my own observations so far.

I just bought a set of Brembo blank front rotors. I'm considering which pads to run with them. My mechanic insists that I should stick with OEM pads to avoid noise. But I'm not sure that I want to do that, particularly after reading your post.

I've been thinking about going with Raybestos Quiet Stop ceramic brake pads. But I haven't completely made up my mind. Have you experienced any noise with your R4's, Mike?

 

A lot of people use the Axxis Metal Masters too. They provide a quiet stop, with little brake dust, and good longevity.

 

Right. I'm aware of Metal Masters. Hmmmm. Maybe I should run a poll and find out what people are up to in terms of replacing their brake pads. If I do, what else should I list besides Porterfield R4s, Raybestos Quiet Stops, Axxis Metal Masters and OEMs? And should I conduct the poll here or in the General Maxima forum?

 

Two things you can potentially not like about R4S: dust and inability to stop smoothly from very low speed, like <1km/hr - the car just stops like hitting a wall. If you drive aggresively you won't notice that . From time to time I hear quiet squeal from them but nothing major. On the other hand I discovered whole new braking range at high speed and they don't fade at all. Now I'm very confident that they'll behave the same through the entire process. On stocks I had to increase pressure on the brakes as they heated up during a stop. Can't compare with others, didn't have chance to use them.
