Did anybody replace their belts at 50k or so?
Did anybody replace their belts at 50k or so?
i just want to see how many had to replace the 2 belts on our car early in my opinion...last time when i was at dealer they told me my should be replace cause of little crack in them...my car is a 98 with only 50k...
From what I hear, it depends on how many cracks you see within every 2 inches. I changed mine at 83000 and they were in bad shape but they held up. Personally, I think they wanted to rob you because they charge over 150 bucks to do the job. It's hell to change the belts especially if you have big arms and hands.
I change mine every 50,000 as a preventative maintenance measure. Getting stranded because of a broken belt is no fun. It's not hard to do yourself. Aftermarket belts cost less than Nissan's (Try the Goodyear Ribbed design) To me the peace of mind in knowing that a belt won't break is worth the few dollars. Same goes for upper and lower radiator hoses. I've got 122,000 on my 95 and it runs like its a 2 year old car.

I changed mine at 63K, because my idler pully bearing was bad. But belt was OK for another year or two. I've changed 3 belts ones in my truck twice in 17 years.
Belts deteriorate due to how you operate your gas pedal, because of age, heat, ozone, and other environmental exposure issues. They should be checked on occasion, but replaced on an individual basis based on actual condition, if you are trying to save a few bucks.
Whenever you let a dealer replace any parts, ask for old parts to be kept and returned to you to verify that they indeed needed replaced. It's the law in most States. Two belts cost lest than $35 at Auto parts store.
An hour labor at $80.00 per, $50 parts. $150 for a dealer to change them. It is a rip. Unless "the book" says it takes 1.5 hours to replace both beltS. But I bet they add up book time for each belt as if they were being replaced at different times.
But, on the other hand, if you change them yourself, and do not set belt tension properly, you could smoke any externals that the belts are attached to. Too tight, bearings fail. Too loose, belt flaps, bearings fail. Now that will be expensive.
Did they ask you to return to have them re-tensioned after short period of time? Hope so. New belts lossen up fairly fat, and may slip.
