It has been running great since I put it back into service, but today I went to start it to go back to work after lunch and the starter wouldn't engage. All other electrical works fine. WTF?

 

Sounds like a solenoid probably went. Have you tried tapping a hammer against the motor? Either way your probably going to need to replace the starter.

Yup, that seems to happen a lot.
I got the starter from Napa with a lifetime warranty and I'm on my second starter in just 3 years.

You can buy a cheap Nissan starter online. I think they are about $60. Don't keep trying to start the car if it engages, but doesn't spin. I broke a tooth on the ring gear doing that.

 

it is the starter. Tapped it with a (brass) hammer and it starts now. Going to have to look into that Lifetime warranty from Napa.

 

Take the starter off and take it apart. Just clean the brass contacts(or turn them over if they are switchable). Sometimes the solenoid is dirty or the plunger is gunked w/ old grease.

 

I was wondering if that was a possibility. Bumper To Bumper has one for $95 with exchange that has a lifetime warranty. Is that a good deal?

 

That doesn't sound to bad. I'd call around just to make sure you got the best price...can't beat shopping around.

That's more expensive than most, but you're paying for the warrantee. I've heard the Nissan starters and alternators are far better than any other aftermarket ones. You can get them for about $50-60 on www.nissanparts.cc

You just have to know the Nissan part numbers. If you're keeping the car for 3+ years, then go ahead and get the one locally with warantee. I'm not sure if you have to pay a core charge for the internet order, but if you do, it'll cost you $10 just to send in your core!

All, Got one w/ a 2 year warranty for $85. Couldn't really wait for shipping on an internet order and no Nissan dealers nearby (look up Horicon on the map if you doubt that).
Anyway, thanks for all the help and good advice!
