Jerkiness, power-loss in low rpms

I have a canadian 2k2 6-speed version, I haven't done the "hesitation fix" (dealer doesn't want to ) ..

My car feels extremely jerky in the lower rpms (especially 2000-3000) and seems to lack power sometimes (on startup on cold days, it feels strong and EVEN oddly enough).

My question: Before all this "hesitation-fix/ecu reprogram" talk, I don't think I ever noticed any of this. However what I HAVE noticed during my last oil change is that my AIR FILTER seems filthy, it's all darkish and crusty looking. On a warmer day, could that be what is causing this jerkiness and/or power loss? I'm at about 20k miles on the odo.

any insight appreciated, thanks.

OEM air filters should be replaced every 10k

Better yet...spend $40 or so on a K&N filter and you never have to worry about changing it again. You just have to clean and re-oil it from time to time but it's not nearly every 10k, I think I remember reading that it needs to be done every 30-50k. Plus you get increased airflow to the engine...what's not to like?!

Thanks guys, I definately WILL change it, I have a FirmFabrications intake that I haven't had time to install yet! -- BUT, do you think that is what has been causing my problems? Would poor airflow cause power loss, jerkiness, etc?

Thanks again! and not coincidentally, i HAVE been getting extremely poor gas mileage, despite being on 'summer gas', and on new summer tires!
