Need help about ecu, on tranny swap please!

I'm doing a tranny swap form auto to stick. My car is a 96 gxe and the donor car is a 97 gxe. My question is, is the ecu plug in a 97 the same as in my 96. The reason I'm thinking about swithching the ecu is because I heard that if I leave my auto ecu in , I will get error codes which means I won't pass smog, and the only way to get rid of them is by getting a five speed ecu. thanks in advance, Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Might be the same.

Why not look at the plugs and see if they match and if they do, plug it in and see if you get a CEL?

(Why not just try it?)

My answer is that it will probably plug in and work, but you'll have an O2 CEL forever.
