Aftermarket GPS Systems
Aftermarket GPS Systems
I have a 2002 Maxima GLE without the Nav system. Does anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket GPS systems? Garmin and Magellan are two systems that look good but how do they compare to built in systems? The Garmin has a small screen and costs around $800-900. The magellan looks larger but has a price of around $1900. Can a NAV system, like the factory unit, be installed at the dealer?
Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your help.
-I purchased a Garmin a year ago and unit works very well. The unit is pretty accurate and best of all, it works on any car. The unit cost me around $1,300 dollars with sofware and other goodies.
-If you're really interested, I will post some pictures of the unit in my car.

The unit requires no external antenna. All you need to do is plug to lighter and enter address. I have my unit mounted on a bean bag mount which sits on dash(There is no drilling required). The unit is awesome and very simple to use. -I will post some pictures tonite when I get home from work...
I have the same Garmin StreetPilot 3. It mounts easily with a mount provied by Garmin just above the two AC vents in the center. It blocks the clock but has one on it. Only complaints are the flimsy mount and rattling. Also titot4u, how do you have the power cord run?
I suggest an Ipaq with Mapopolis Navigor and a Holux 270 GPS card. I just sold my Garmin w/routing because this solution was so good. The Mapopolis data is Navtech, which is actually newer than what Nissan/Infiniti had when I was buying the G last week.. In fact, it was 2 years older in some instances. I have the latest quarter of street level Navtech data on my Ipaq right now. A 256M SD Card will old much of a state.. in fact, I have 3 states Zipped, and can unpack what I need in 5 secs.
The street data again is the same.. The DVD solution of the OEM Nav has more Points of Interest info. However, I have just about all hotels and most restaurants in Mapopolis.

You will want to look at Routis or Mapopolis (and perhaps now Copilot 4 for PPC). All very good values.
You can get the Holux at Semsons.com, they are perhaps the best company I have dealt with in a long time. Their return policies and shipping times are among the best. You probably dont want the Ultra Holux, thats more for geocaching or surveying.. The regular Holux is more suited for car nav.

I place the wire on side of dash while I'm driving. The wires are often out of the way but may get in the way from time to time when I reach for the climate control. If you are keeping the unit on your dash full time, then I can see it being a nuisance.
