I took my father in law's bonnyville for a drive today, it has the 3.8 ltr supercharged v6 gtp engine in it. It can burn a hell of alot of rubber off the tires at a dead stop, other than that my 2003 max 6sp will take it out for sure from start to 145 mph, i find it has a big dead spot at around 80km/hr when you floor the pedal it just humms along, dont get me wrong it still pulls good but not like my max. I always heard that the pontiac gtp engine was a torque monster , now i will gladly accept a race from my father in law and maybe put a little wager on it too.

 

yeah, i think american cars dont have very good gearing. If they did, they would kill.... but they would still fall apart in a few months.

 

Don't underestimate the GTP's L67 (3.8 supercharged). A couple of simple bolt-on mods (i.e pulley) and they can be made to be very fast.

Yes, "can me made very fast" but it also weighs 3600 pounds so it's a little on the heavy side. Last I read it only did mid-15s stock.

 

You're right and i'm not trying to start an argument about whether a Maxima is faster or not. Don't forget i am a Maxima owner too. But i also have a 2000 Grand Prix parked in my laneway.

All i'm saying is do not "understestimate" a GTP. I've seen them run anywhere from 15 to 15.3s stock. And minor bolt-ons such as an intake and a pulley puts them into the the low to mid 14's. Some have even gone to 13.9s with those mods plus a catback. With 280 ft/lbs of torque, they can pull pretty fast from take-off (with good traction) but they have a tendency to choke and die off in the upper range.

That pic was made by a Grand Prix owner. They have generation/powertrain fights as bad or perhaps worse than we do.

 

With 2 valves per cylinder the GTP's are gaspin for air after the quarter mile - no top end at all-even with the supercharger- If GM only put a manual tranny or used they overpayed engineers to develop a valve/timming system

I find it interesting that GM developed the 3.5 DOC 24 v6 for the Intrigue and Aurora 3.5 and then stated that the 3.8 would as Rush says it "Exit Stage Left" in 2002. Well guess not..... My question is why not put the super on that engine? Anywho..... I'll take my 2k SE over the GTP but that's me.

I owned a 1990 Bonneville SSE for 8 years and put 170k miles on it and it was still running great when I sold it in 1998. Only problem I had in 8 years was the fuel pump was replace under warranty at 65k. It was a great car. Now I have a Max and it is also a great car but in a different way.

By the way, have you ever owned a Bonneville or were you just mouthing off for no reason?
