Brake noise when almost stopped?

New guy here, but did a search and I can't tell
you how many different brake noise issues I read.
Only one came close, but no cigar.
Here goes, on a 91-SE:

No noises or problems at any speed or turning.
Noise happens within 30-60 seconds before coming to full stop.
Usually sounds like a spring winding, sometimes clunking.
Not a squeal or metal grinding.
Feels like ABS may be trying to work, sometimes the pedal pulses a little.
Sometimes small, other times longer, but goes away for periods.

Just had a CV boot done (drivers outer), and had to take it back as the guy must have broken one of the seals, and trans fluid was coming out. Noise sounds like its coming from passenger side though...

Ideas? Thanks!

You must be really wearing your brakes out if your brakeing for up to a minitue. You might want to quit riding you brakes. Does your ABS light come on at all? Sounds like it is ABS realated to me.

The noise you are refferring to sounds to me like the abs is engaging at times that it shouldnt. Even though the light may not be comming on that dosent mean that there isnt a problem. Have you local mechanic check and test the abs system. If the problem lies somewhere else they should be able to pinpoint it. Most garages wont charge you to just "look" at it.

OK, maybe 5-10 seconds and just before dead stop.
Pedal pressure light to firm.
We have LOTS of stop and go traffic here in N. VA,
so I start to slow as soon as I see I'll need to.
My brake life is actually very good.

ABS light never comes on.

Does it make a hummmm noise when it pulses. Mine did this when I bought the car. I had the brakes replaced and ABS checked out. My Mechanic cleaned the connections on the ABS sensors and it went away, but my abs light came on in its place. And now won't go off.(brakes fine though.) The shop said I have a bent abs sensor that needs to be replaced. ( The guy that had my car before me ran over something on the passenger side, because it also cracked the fender, broke the foglight and my headlight moves around too!

In your case, I would check my brake pads. How long have you had them? How many miles?

I have a 91 GXE without ABS and i'm starting to hear it on my left side only. It should't be my pads or discs because i just changed them last month. I'm thinking it might be something to do with my calipers.

i'd say I've had my pads about 7 and a half months.

Hi,

I was going over some old post last night looking for an answer for the same problem on my 91 Max. The symtoms you described are exactly the same. Did you ever find the cause and how did you fix it?
