2k 5spd vs. 2002-2003 auto.....

Ok, I know this has been brought up, but I want to take an informal poll.

Do you think a 2k 5 speed, with a y-pipe and modded intake, could beat a totally stock 2002-2003 auto?

This kind of intrigues me. If you can get 20 extra horses on the 5 speed with those mods, I would think this would be a close one.

A 255 hp at the crank auto vs. 240 hp at the crank 5 speed should be a good race.

Thoughts?

I would have to say drivers race. Whoever launches better wins.

If shifted flawlessly and driven hard, I would guess the stick would win.

its not the hp...why dont people understand that. its the torque. VQ35 makes about 270 torque to crank while the VQ30DE-k only makes about 215.
VQ35 for the maxima only has about 240hp.

i am pretty sure it will be a tie. but look what the 5sp has to do in order to stay with the 2k2 auto. just shows you the power of the 3.5

I concur....manual can launch at 2000rpm and torque braking an auto only goes up to 1500 the most.

Yup, I haven't tried this but based on .org info the 2k1s have great top-end HP (especially with the mods listed), but much lower torque.

So, if it's a race off the line it's probably the 3.5 (agree that it's so close it comes down to the launch though). From a roll? Could be the 2k1 with those mods.

Regarding the launch (different post), favoring one car over another based on possible rpm at start isn't really a valid comparison. There's no need to launch a 2k3 at more than 1,500 (or 1,200, for that matter) because it's already hard to hook up the tires with so much torque and FWD. And I'd guess the 3.5 still generates more torque at that rpm than the 3.0 at 2,000...?

one time when i was trying to burn rubber, i got the car to brake torque and launch at 2500 rpm. no matter how much throttle i gave it, though, the car just wouldn't rev higher than that. is there sort of a launch control on the car?

14.8 seems to be the average 1/4 on the auto here.

Yeah the only way is if its modded, stock for stock the 02 auto will win. I have ran several 96's and 00's all manuals and beat each of them, I walked my old 01 with my brother driving and we swapped and it was manual to me the 02/03 autos really pull strong in the 2nd and 3rd gears from a stop. Even though its a manual are torque is just so much better than the 00/01's not to add that autos are so much more consistent.

I'm game to run a Y2k-2k1 Max 5speed. Seriously though, I've yet to run a VQ30 5th gen of any type. But I have run a few 4th gen 5speeds and smoked them pretty handily.

Peace.

The 3.0L vq is no slouch. Here is a proof that it comes down to drivers.

Cool. I forgot all about that thread. So, I guess that settles it. Modded 2k 5spd ownz stock 2002-2003 auto, and 6 spd on the highway.

With the appropriate mods, I'm not surprized that a 3.0 VQ can take a 2002-2003, although I think the mods would need to be significant.

Stock vs. stock I don't think it would be much of a contest (between a 5-speed 3.0L and an auto 3.5L). A properly driven stick should get off the line a little harder but I'd imagine that the 3.5L would begin to walk by thereafter.

I had a 98 SE 5-speed (which I don't think is too much slower than a 2000 or 2001) and, while it was quick, it does not pull like the my 2003 auto.

The 3.0L VQ did, however, feel much smoother in operation than the 3.5L. Even at five years old, the motor felt brand new.

I used to have a Mark VIII (Hot Rod Lincoln ) that would run high 14s all day long (these have the Cobra's DOHC 32V 4.6). Heck that car would bark 2nd and slide sideways if you really had your boot in it .
Point is, my Max feels every bit as strong as that car did...in fact I still have the # of the guy who bought it from me...wonder if he'd wanna run em?

That says alot for the VQ30 because my VQ35 is easily the smoothest engine of any car I've EVER owned.

I agree with Evan the 3.0 is smoother than the 3.5 and even several publications have noted/felt that as well.

Ive read the same. I dont remember if it was car and driver or what but thet were talking about how the 3.5 lost some of that super smooth rev . but they said its still one ot the best v6 ever.
