'Engine check' with misfire on starting

3.0L Maxima - this just started happening.
Starting cold or hot, occasionally it will start and immediately misfire, with the engine check light on.
Gently pressing the gas pedal the revs pick up and after maybe 10-20 seconds the misfire clears and the light goes out.
Happened twice yesterday, once the day before, not always.

I haven't even lifted the hood yet... I suspect plug or coil cable but am looking for direction.

I see all these codes (eg P0300, P0302 etc) - is there a tool I can use to read these?

usually autozone and other parts stores have scanners they can plug in to see what the codes mean, but often they don't do much good. my wife kept having a misfire in cyl#4 on her altima.. we spent several hundred bucks continually replacing everything on the ignition system to no avail. finally we took it to a mechanic and he told us in about 30 seconds it was a bad intake manifold gasket. (of course the repair estimate was $500 for labor and $5.50 for parts).. took it home and replaced the gasket myself over a weekend and it's been running fine ever since.

in your case, I'm not sure what it could be. I'm suspecting possibly a sticky lifter could also be a culprit, but call a aprts store and find a scanner and see if they can tell you anything with them.
