Speed Sensor - Again.... any gurus out there?

Hello all,

I know this is a beaten topic, but my speedometer/odometer on my 1993 Maxima has been acting nuts. It might work, then the next second the needle drops to zero and the mileage stops recording.

I have been told this is my Speed Sensor.

I called Nissan of obtain the part. $180 and special order! Also, I was directed by someone else on the forum that on the 1993 the speed sensor is located on the firewall directly behind the oil filter. Then I heard, it is located on or near the transmission.

Does anyone really know where it is? ;-) and can Joe-driver/non mechanic like myself replace it? Is there anywhere to buy it and get the RIGHT one without shelling out $180 to Nissan plus $70/hr. for installation?

On a side-note, the power antenna has seized as I know they are known to do. I don't want to shave it-- but I would like to replace it with something other than another stock antenna that would be prone to getting stuck again down the road. Anyone replace theirs with another motorized one that they like? What kind/where did you get it?

Thanks everyone.

If you have a VG engine then it will be in the tranny near the firewall. It is a little cylindrical object with two wires sticking out. Check your wires, it is possible they could be bad and that be your entire problem. On my 91 gxe the wires somehow moved and touched the exhaust manifold melting the plastic and making the two wires touch together. I just cut out the bad stuff and crimped on some good wire.

Speed sensor is held in with one bolt, try removing speed sensor and checking to see if black top (about 1 1/2 inches in diameter) is all the way down. For some reason they back out, if not all the way in try tapping it down with a mallet.
If speed sensor is bad, order from Coutesey Nissen.

Can't help with the speed sensor; but I did replace the antenna on my '90 GXE last week. I posted a couple threads about the problem. A lot has been written. Everybody said to be sure it wasn't just the mast ($20). In my case it was the entire unit which I bought from a dealer for 200 !@$%!&* dollars. Someone said they are on e-bay motors for about $40. Sure enough they look the same. You remove the exsisting timer (some small solid-state box) and reinstall it on the new antenna. Good Luck
