Engine Mounts help!! How many engine mounts does 2002 Maxima have?

Hey guys, I need help with engine mounts. I think one of mine might be broken.

I read online somewhere that we have 4 engine mounts, right?

Basically here is the story I went to the track for the first time ever last week with my car to see what it will run, it was fun and all, but on one of my runs I got really bad wheel hop. I launched to high and the car just started hoping forward, it was kinda scary. I did think much of it but on my way home from the track I started hearing this loud thump/clunk when taking off in first and reverse gears. In other words when I put the load on the engine.

My dad and I did some looking around and we found out that when I take off in 1st gear the engine moves forward and then the load is off the engine it moves back and that is when the loud thump/clunk comes up. Same thing happens when I am in reverse gear the engine moves backwards and then moves back to the original place and that is when the loud thump/clunk comes up.

My car is at the dealer now and they saying it is not engine mounts. But it really sounds like engine mount is broken.

I found this article online and it desribes what I have pretty well: http://www.andhragarage.com/Motormounts.html

Does anybody have any experience with engine mounts and had anybody ever replaced them on 2002 or other Maximas?

Thanks alot guys. I feel like crap because I might have damaged my car at the track.

I have heard of this and each time it was the engine mounts. You can get some urethane ones from cattman.com. they will hold up better. I have been told that the engine mounts for 99's will work on 00-01 or even 02 but call and ask them. Urethane should hold up better. And watch out for the ****'s out there who will ***** to you and tell you that you are taking advantage of the dealership blah blah blah

Taking advantage of the dealership? What the hell are you talking about? As far as '02 mounts, I would be surprised if the '99s fit. Last I heard was that someone was developing them for the '02s and that was back in March I believe.

Yeah, that is what I am thinking that it is the egnine mounts. But dealer looked at them and told me that engine mounts are not the problem. Car is still at the dealer and are they still looking.
On 6-speed Maxima, engine mounts are luquid filled right?
The reason I am saying it is because I noticed this strange smell at the same time I started hearing that loud thump/clunk.

Dany, here is a thread on that same experience you had. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=229094

I know some of the pics are dead, but a few show up. It honestly sounds like the rear engine mount (there are three). Yes, they are liquid filled and if you are able to get underneath your car, you will see where it had leaked down. Check out this link on my Car Domain site for more pics of this problem: http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...=301377&page=7

Hey, thanks alot. I think it is my rear engine mount that is broken too. I can feel that loud thump/clunk is hitting right near pedals.

Also, one more question. I thought there were 4 engine mounts. 1 in the rear, 1 in the front, 1 on left side and 1 on right side. At least that is what I think I saw under the hood. I didn't see the rear mount because it hard too see without getting under the car.

I will call my dealer now and tell him about the rear mount.

I noticed in your post on the thread you said they put new 11320-40U01 Insulator-Engin (~$90) for the rear engine mount.
So that is what broke?

My dealer just called me and told me that the tech fixed it, but service advisor didn't know what they changed. Hopefully it was the same thing you got and that my car is fixed.

Yes, that is what broke on mine. I would harp on your service advisor to find out what they fixed, and also do your own test (first gear start, feel for thud; also in reverse). At first, I thought it was my FSTB being hit by the top of the engine. Hopefully whatever they fixed will stay fixed.

What rpm were you launching at the strip? I really abused mine the night I broke the engine mount (12 plus races). My launches were consitently between 2500 and 3k.

Hey, I went to the dealer yesterday and to no suprize they didn't fix the car. Well they thought they did. I told them and showed pics that you took and they said they will order rear mount for me and replace it. They told me that all mounts looked good, but I am pretty sure it is not that easy to see only if you really look at them, especially the rear one. You would think they would check it, while having the car there for two days

Also, you were right about engine having 3 mounts, the 4th one is a transmission mount. It is on the driver side.

Speaking of transmission mount, they thought it was the problem for my loud clunk/thump. My advisor told me that it was a little loose probably because of the previous clutch TSB work they done on the car a while back.

Anways next week they will replace my rear engine mount. Hopefully it will fix the problem.

As for my launching at the track, I only managed 3 runs, only two of which can be called runs. On one of them I didn't know what I did, but I got all confused at the line and I think I just floored it and car just started hoping like crazy. I think that is when I broke the mount. On my last run which was my best I didn't get wheel hop at all I think, and I launched at about 2000rpms. Need to learn how to slip clutch more to eliminate the nasty wheel hop.

i had the same problem, right after the track, it causes the thumping you describe..

Turns out my rear mount had a hair line fracture.. and was replaced under warranty.. This was on my 2k2.

For my 2k3, its not broken yet but i would expect soon..

Yeah I am 100% sure that it is because of the rear mount. They will replace it this coming Monday.
As for busting engine mounts again, I think what we have to do is slip the clutch more when we laucnh. Yes it will burn the clutch but it is better than damaging mounts.
I need to work on my launch more.

Do you think is there anyway to launch to minimize wheel hop?
On my last run at the track I didn't get almost any wheel hop and my 60ft where better. I launched at about 2000rpms. I think I just need more practice.
