killed a pontiac firebird....

from a roll with four people in my max. I didn't think I would leave him so far behind....

all this was about 9 pm on a fairly deserted street... (Merced, California gets pretty dead around 9 pm on Olive Street)

Anyway while waiting for the left turn arrow to turn green I see the pop-up lights and the round fog lights right up my max's ****... I could tell it was a firebird... light turns green and I make the turn onto the inside lane of three lane street and casually cruising with my kid bro and two cousins... the firebird follows suit but in the far right lane. The next light we stopped at had a old beater van in the middle lane and another car in the far right lane about to turn right so the fiirebird was a car behind.

Light goes green and I take off leisurely and the car in front of firebird makes a turn into a gas station after the intersection and the firebird is about even again but we had to stop at another light shortly after. The beater can slowly pulls to the light blocking our view of the firebird. At this moment I didn't think of gunning it but had a intuition that the firebird might run but we'll see.

Light turns green and I run my first gear all the way to 3k rpms and see that the firebird was matching speed to about 25 to 30ish mph just shifting to 2nd (older beater van behind now allowing clear view)...( I mention to my kid bro in the shotgun that the firebird might just run, and he said what car?)....Then I hear the firebird floor it so I follow suit and run my second all the way to redline.... by this time he's at my rear quarter panel and seem to start gaining.... but once I dropped it in third I left him like his motor just died and lead him by at least 8 cars....(we're at 90mph by then and I shut it down for the next light)

At this point I thought I beat a firebird with 3 people in the car? Then my kid bro goes, "You beat him with four." (I've got so hyped up I forgot about one of the cousins being in the car.) Now that's even better...

The firebird pulls up to the light and we look over and see a guy and and what I assume to be his girlfriend in the passenger seat. I was gonna give him the thumbs up but he refused to look over in agony of defeat. He wanted to run again from a standstill because when the light turn green he was screeching his tire like mad but unfortunately my next turn was like 2 blocks ahead so I declined and just cruised and merged towards the far right lane. He must have been ticked off that I didn't run with him again...

I just thought the firebird had to be a v6 to be that slow...
Oh well, I got my win....

The ss is real quick. Especially the 99-00 model.

Do you mean we can only post about racing that happens on weekends or do you mean we can only post during the weekends about races?

Yeah I did forget to mention it was this past Sunday that the event occured but been so busy I didn't have a chance to post about it. Speed is addictive when driving the max... I can't help it when the oppurtunity reveals itself... especially with 3 clear lanes for at least half a mile...

Did I mention my 6spd 2k2 max was bone stock in terms of engine mods?

The only mods I have are the Addco Sway Bar (installed august sept. 2k2) and a new set of kuhmo's I've had put on 2 weeks ago (just thought I get a new set to replace the blowtenzas anyway after finding a half inch long cut on the side wall of the front passenger side tire)...

yep...sounds like a V6, if it was a V8 it would of had Trans Am or Formula emblems. I wouldn't say they are like civics though. The 3.8 V6's are decent (low 15's stock) , the 3.4 V6 is the slow one (I think they run in the 16's)

I raced a WS6? or something, it had a RAM AIR decal on the back, and the exhaust tips said Flowmaster, I saw it had some street drag tires that were wider than both my tires combined so i decided to run... Needless to say .. thats how i knew what it was... I saw the rear the whole time, it wasnt stock.. and it had a S/C whine the whole time! he said he ran 12's

Now, if my memory serves me correct, this should be the line-up of the Firebird vs. Camaro vs. Maxima. I researched them less than a year ago as I was deciding on whether to get one of the last F-Body cars made and keep it for a collector's edition.

The Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am runs a V8. The WS6 package for it includes the addition of a Ram-Air Induction package, upgraded exhaust, some small badging extras, and a few other options that aren't engine related. If you race one of these, you'll get your rear-end handed to you on a silver platter. Without any Forced Induction in your car, they'll kill you left and right. The WS6 and the SS Camaro are running the same engine with the same setup.

The Pontiac Firebird Formula is also a V8, with 20 less ponies than the WS6. It's a driver's race if you are slightly modded, but they'll take you at 100+ MPH because of the gearing they have. If my memory is correct, this is what the Camaro Z28 setup is like.

The Pontiac Firebird base model is a V6, which you can easily kill stock. The Camaro base model is also like the Pontiac Firebird base model.

ok my friend has a 2000 transam ws6 and he's the one who got me way into racing and we go every weekend, here's the lowdown all the v8 models have the same engine the "ls1" its a 5.7L 8cyl motor that they put in the 97+corvettes all other f-bodies with ls1's are 98+
Firebird Formula
Pontiac Transam
Camaro Z28
those all have the ls1 engine in them and would completely OLIDERATE our maximas, believe me, i know..
Camaro SS's and TransAm WS6's are the same engine but with a ram air mod so they will dyno the same, but when they are racing it adds like 10hp or so.. but anyways, dont ever mess with an LS1 - they will win, and just not by a couple cars.. v6 f-bodies are just crap.

and i doubt that car you raced had a s/c on it - but if it was a really loud whine then yeah, but my friends has just full exhaust, headers, no cats, offroad ypipe, and ECU tuning software and he's running high 12's - s/c ls1's should be in the 11's - i saw a s/c z28 vs a modded 03 cobra the other weekend, the 03 cobra got WALKED! hard.

Having just sold my '02 Z28 I can tell you there is not much on the road that will walk a LS1. Bone stock they put down 310 to the wheels! I ran my Z28 very quickly to the limiter of 162mph! They run a low 13 stock @ 105-109mph! 4th gear is the by by gear!

Aside from the fantastic motor (LS1), the F-body is a POS! Hence the reason there is a new Maxima in my garage.

ide definatly take an ls1 over my 2k2 - unless your going for luxury, i mean exhaust mods on the ls1 sound soooo mean - and they are just so quick

If you don't mind $hitty fit and finish, lack of refinement, and i'll handling with the solid rear axle, buy a f-body.

The only LS1 I'd buy is the Vette!
