Nissan called me.

Last month, I sent in a service response card with some pretty negative feedback on it. One of my biggest concerns was that, during the service visit (which was for a faulty stereo), I pointed out to the service writer that there was an unusually high number of paint chips on the car. He basically brushed it off, saying that it was NOT a common thing for any Nissan car and that I must have followed a rock truck too closely or something.

Well yesterday, Erin from Nissan Customer Service called me (damn she sounded hot, too--I think they do that on purpose). Anyway, when I told her about the problem and how the paint chip issue is fairly common knowledge, she said that she had never heard of it either. She suggested that I make another service appointment specifically for the paint and that I bring any supporting documents to suggest that this is a widespread problem.

My biggest concern is that Nissan is going to try to hold me responsible for the paint chips when the lease is over. Of course, it would also be nice if they would fix it!

Any suggestions?

We did have some lawyers working on a class action suit against Nissan on this issue but there hasn't been any updates for months and months.

take a camera to the local mall and snap pictures of the fronts of a few dozen maximas... they couldn't *all* be following trucks too closely

How about we all just take pictures of our front end and post it then he could print it out and bring it to "HOT BABE ERIN"

P.S. I'm sure NOT all of us tailgate a truck filled with rocks all the time, am I right?!?!

You are very right!! Living in the 'rural' area I do, I often drive for more than half of my 25 mile commute to work without being behind ANYONE.

I noticed my friends black 350Z was COVERED in rock chips with approx. 7K miles.

Thank GOD...I didn't get a dark colored Nissan. I thought it was dirt or something, however I knew he just had it washed/detailed and when I looked closer it had the appearance of a light sandblasting. F-that!

Yo I've had a black Max for nearly 18K miles now and my chips aren't that bad. Granted I have a 3m clear bra, the rest of my car isn't too dinged up. You can check out my latest wash n' wax on my webpage

Mine's like that too on the front-end, but I don't care as every car I've driven was like that... (well, after 100+K miles or so)

I don't think Nissan will hold you responsible for paint chips when you return your car when lease is over. But I do agree paint is a biggest POS.

While at the dealer this weekend....(looking at the new quest for the wife)...I picked up a 350z "Sales Training Book" that basically pointed out all the new things with the 350, and how to sell them effectivly. Well at the end it pointed out a new clear coat paint deal that was suppose to be more durable. NOW, why would they be concerned with durability of PAINT unless there are complaints.

Hope that made sense......

Do a search on paint - Nissan has repainted several cars for free.

Does that dealership have pre-owned vehicles? There is usually a bunch of 5th gens. if so check those out for some proof.

other than that i would suggest get a bunch of people to email you their paint chip pictures. im sure theyll say "these could be photoshops".

does nissan train the service department to try and deny as many claims as possible? I never even bothered to mention all my chips, or my warped rotors, or ****ty tranny. id rather have the one i have now then some rebuilt pos.(sorry for the rant). my last nissan.

Boy, am I glad I refied out of my NMAC loan, and after reading those horror stories, my $150 beef with Nissan is nothing. Too damn scary those yahoos can mess up your credit for little crap like that.

I've said this before and will say it again. Love my car, hate the company. They'll never get a red cent from me ever again.

Anybody know what happened to this site?

www.nissanpaint.com

It was a site dedicated to the poor paint quality on the 5th generation Maximas.

why not get everyone in here with a 5th gen maxima to take pics...
and send them to him, and then he can use that as "documented proof" or whatever...

I'll take pics of anyone with a 5th gen in KC if they don't have a digital camera...

i would imagine Nissan paid them a pretty penny to remove it...or Nissan went and killed it with some high dollar hackers...? no?

I think I've got the highest paint chips/horsepower ratio. The Long Island Expressway
destroyed the paint on my hood being sandblasted by tractor trailers and construction
vehicles. I got into a screaming match with the manager of Smithtown Nissan in NY.
They wouldn't do anything for me so I've made it my life's mission to make sure that
everyone knows that Smithtown Nissan in Smithtown, NY sucks my scr*t*m!

Pics Of My 2k Se Hood

Here's a link to a picture of my hood, lots of paint chips.

My father's (the dealer) prep guy couldn't buff it out. It was pretty much like this when I bought in June.

Sorry she's a little dirty.

I have a 2002 I35 and I am sick to say that I am in the same boat. Not just with the paint, but the rotors also. This is not my first car but it is the first Nissan/Infiniti that I have owned. This is also the first time I have had any of these silly problems with a car. I don't know why they used paint to start with (another first I believe) but why would they paint the dash and console trim to get the color they want instead of using solid color plastic??? I not only have paint coming off the front of my car but also little chips all along my shifter console piece. Where's the quality?

P.S. I have always wanted to know if the front door glass on the maxima is thicker than the rear door glass? It is on my car and it does make it quieter for front seat passengers than in the rear. No matter how much the fix the little windows in the back with the TSB's, the glass is thinner in the rear thus allowing more outside sounds in. Cheap!

Has anyone ever done a climate comparison of people with rock chip problems? I think we should do a poll. It seems to me (and this is just by quick visual inspection of this thread) that most people with the rock chip problem live in warmer climates. I for one live in upstate NY, and have not yet had too many rock chips (furiously knocking on wood). Maybe the climate affects the way the paint/clearcoat cures, and warmer climates are more prone? Just an idea.

I had tons of paint chips on my hood and fenders, however, I have friends in high places at a local nissan dealership body shop and got the front end painted, they did a great job of matching (its pearl white) and I haven't had any problems since, got to love that non-factory paint!

Oh it no more durable, before we got a mask for our 350 it accumulated tons of chips, its paint is just as bad as the Maximas and scratches so easy like the Maximas.
