Going to track tonight, what VI setting to use?

I tried 5k last time, but it was too much of a changeover. You could hear it clearly. Its at 5100 now, and its nice and smooth. I have all of the codes wrote down for 5k, 5100, 5200, and 5300 so I might just use them all. All of you that go to the track alot which one helped you the most? Thanks, Wayne

Off to my shop to put on my stockers. 99 SE rims. Man does the max look low with these on, and they look so little too. Doesnt even look right. But oh well, not gonna go with the 19s on thats for sure 30+ lbs each!

If the stockers came in 17's or 18's I'd pick up a set.

5300-5400 is the optimal changeover. I've track tested this numerous times and there IS a difference, I would never believe 100 or 200rpm could make that much of a difference if I didn't have numerous timeslips to prove it. I lose about .5-.75mph through the traps using 5200 vs 5400. I have mine set at 5400.

Hah! I just put on my stockers today too! (A friend wanted to borrow my rims for a show.) It was strange seeing the stock 16" SE rims back on the car after 4 years, but it doesn't look bad at all. The tires looked like they are cracking tho...=P

Anyway, to keep this thread on topic, I dynoed and the optimum VI N/A activation point for my car was 5200 rpms. For my nitrous set up, it is 4700/4800 rpms.

I've got a manual VI switch so I can engage my VI whenever I want. It's pretty much a safeguard in case the Harlan flakes out during a 1/4 mile run (ie I can flip the switch and not waste the run). Here's something weird though. Earlier in the year when I ran my 14.45@99.5mph (March, 55 degrees), I was having problems with my Harlan switch flaking out on track day. I ran a couple higher 14.5 at almost 97mph with the Harlan flaking out in 3rd. On my final run I decide to manually flip the switch at an indicated 5100rpms in 2nd and I left the switch open the rest of the run, even on the gear change. I ended up running a 14.45@99.5mph. I ran again in April using the manual switch in 2nd gear on every run and I ran another 14.45 and a bunch of 14.5s even though the weather has in the mid 80s that day.

As for the 5400rpm switchover, I'd love to do it because I think you're probably right it, but as you and I both know, the Harlan RPM switch seems slow to react. If I set it for 5400rpms, it doesn't open till an indicated 5700-5800rpms most of the time. There seems to be a 200-400rpm delay most of the time. Mine is now set 5100rpms and seems to open at an indicated 5300-5400rpms. So that means the VI is opening at around 5100-5200 "true" rpms (accounting for tach error).

Its been at 5100, but still a very clear switchover, so I will just try them all next week at the track. 5200 sounds good too

hasty choice really, and im finally fixing to get the g-force upgrade soon. sending it off this weekend. in the future i plan to have the jwt upgraded one, im just not willing to wait two months for it at present time. a local track is having midnight madness on the 18th and im trying to get the ecu back by then ..

I tested this both with my Harlan and my Summit. Actually more of my testing was done on the harlan. 53-5400 setting worked best for me at the track. Everything else slowed me down.
