just hacked my stock air box (warning long thread)

i hacked my air box today because i hear so many people talking about how its better. i wanted to see for myself if it is better than a hybrid intake. i had the bomz kit.

here is what i did.

on lower airbox- i cut a big trangle into the facing the fender away fromthe hot engine air.(its box itself has a triangle shape right there). i was going to dremel a square in front where its facig teh battery, but i thought that would defeat the purpsoe of keeping the snorkel.

kept the big intake snokel and removed the silencer under the battery, there is a curved pipe that that leads to it from the big snorkel thing. i left it there to suck in some extra cold air. it faces away from the engine. used black electric tape to keep it from falling. (the first silencer collects alot of dirt sand and dead bugs over the years, pretty nasty mine had 4 bees, a wasp, and like 3 moths)

the other silencer that is just after the MAF, the part that has a tube and another small airbox comming up from the main intake piece after the maf. it also has a screw that connects it to the snorkel. i took off that whole thing from the tube going up and plugged it with a hobby shop sized spray paint can cap. fits perfect.

using a k&n panel filter

this setup is dope. it truly is smoother throughout the power band when u accelerate liek most people say. my check engine light is now gone too!! . i took her to red line in 1, 2 and 3rd a couple times down local streets. i dont feel any power loss form the hybrid. it does kick in a little better at low rpms 1-2.5 k so there is slight imporvement there. i dont know about freeway speeds yet, ill write about that tomarrow when i compare it on my way to school.

sounds- its not as loud as the hybrid. but u can still hear it when you wot. sounds deep, but not loud. i like it. can still get peoples attention but isnt annoying at all.

im definately going to keep this over the bomz kit.

conclusion, if your on a budget, this is the way to go, if you have a hybrid intake and hate that u lose some low end and wanna get it back, this is the way to go, (i cant compare to cai cause i never had it.) sorry this was so long guys, jsut wanted to be thurough.

i'm not sure but i think the 300z fuel filter is bigger or something and lasts longer. . . or not? i don't know.

you sir are right...they just last longer...won't deliver more fuel or anything. I'm gonna be doing this intake mod soon myself, hopefully before the winter comes around

- 300z fuel filter is just for looks i guess cause its friggin fat. but it doesnt deliver more fuel. i think the engine is running smoother after i put it in but that is just because my old one was wayy dirty..

-i bought my rear strut brace bar from the person i bought my addco rsb from. he said he had a friend of this at a shop custom make it. it looks liek anyother rstb but it doesnt have a brand on it so i didnt knwo what to put so i used teh word "custom". fits perfect and feels sturdy. thats good enough for me.

highway report- i dont feel any gains or loss from hybrid. tested by doing a coupe of 3rd gear 45mph to 90(roughly redline) runs.(i would have done 4th but i would end up goign 115+ mph and there wasnt enough room on freeway for that during mornign commute) feels the same jsut not as loud. but most likely there may be a 1-2 hp loss from hybrid towards the very top of the gear. but that is because i still have the snorkle and the air has a logner way to travel the the TB. same trade off as with a cai, but my cut opening at the lower airbox helps this over the cai a little bit in theory. but liek the cai, low and mid range power is much smoother,i dont feel any deadspots anymore, just smooth constant accel to 5.5 then not haveing a MEVI kicks in..

i wont do a write up because i dont think there is a "correct" way to do this. if you look at the stock intake system, you have many options. cutting holes in lower airbox, takign off resonators, using a midpipe instead of the piece after the maf, taking off your putting on the big snorkel, cutting a big hole in the resonator beneath the battery(its like a cheap factory cai if you do that) or any combination of these. just use your own logic and common sense of physics and im sure of youll think of soemthing that works fine. and for a free mod, it doesnt get any better.

i may take pics for you guys though this weekend if i can get my friends digicam.

have fun hackign yoru box. peace. wow this was long again..

Not a bad configuration, I used to have like 8 fans but got tired of the noise. So I got watercooling, and now I only have 4 fans.

Yeah my Maxima is slow, but I'll still race ya! I cruise around Cerritos, Lakewood, and Long Beach... Hit me up on AIM if you wanna meet up one of these days.

Thanks a lot for a write up and pics. I am kinda on a budget too so that's a nice project for me. Also, I was wondering as well, what's that hose to the right from the front valve body that does not connect to anything???
