Loud "whirring" that matches RPMs

ok heres the deal: I have a 92 SE 5 speed. When accellerating i get a loud "whirring" sound, seems to get louder with the RPMs. anyone have any ideas? it does not seem to be effecting anything, but it is loud and annoying. any help would be great!

Thanks

Doug

I've got the same problem, haven't figured it out yet,but I think mines the P/S pump. Every once in a while when backing out with the wheel almost to the stops, I get a loud screech and a big vibration through the steering wheel. Usually happens when the car is cold and it's only happened 4 or 5 times in the last 3 months or so. Any idea's?

The 94 SE I test drove seemed to have the same whirrrrrr.

In fact, it didn't sound like any engine I had EVER heard before. It almost sounded electric. It sounded nothing like the VG I drove for a year and a half. I kind of liked it though, it was really smooth and the power just kept on comin'.

I'm happy now though with my SR20DE, nothing feels as good or quite sounds like a DOHC 16valve 4-cylinder swinging the tach north of 7,000 rpms!

it could be exaust leak - do you have aftermarket y-pipe ?

I have the same problem with my 4th gen

it only happens when the engine is cold , once it gets worm whirrring noise goes away.

no its a 92 SE the one on the left in my info is a different one. its not an exhaust leak its definately comign from the head. i was thinking VTCs but thats just a mild tick, this is enough to wake the dead when you really get on the gas. seriously. i was revving it up in the garage at work listening and people where asking on the other end of the building if i was illing a cat..... so obviously its a very annoying noise and id liketo take care of it. any help would be great guys!

THanks

its not the VTCs from waht i have read in the FAQ and SEARCHING (that thing under my name is ****ing me off!!!) i know the vtc noise is there when i idle. i can hear that. but this is VERY loud whenever the engine is about 2 grand. its almost scary. no performance loss so im still driving it, but its enougt o wake the friggn dead. somone help me out, and its no pullies either we checked those.

Is it possible that maybe your exhaust manifold has a MAJOR crack in it?? Cause I hear that when you run an open exhaust it sounds terriblly loud, so if a crack is bad enough maybe it could sound that bad.

Y Pipe. or rotted tail section. Use your feet to feel the vibration while you're driving.

y-pipe eh'...i was thinking around that area since it is definitly coming from in front of me and possibly where the pedals are...the y-pipe is supposedly only about 1-2 years old but could a busted gasket or something be causing the sound?

could be, but cheap pipes don't last especially in inclimate climates. (or places that salt)

OK. Forgive me but for some reason I cant remember what year the 3rd gen switched from the VG. WIth mine, a VG its the Timing belt tensioner that I put on a little too tight and need to loosen up, according to two mechanics that listened to it, they weren't concerned and said they often put them on a little tight because the belt will stretch somewhat. So if you have the VE this is of no use and sorry for wasting your time.

thanks for the ideas guys, but its not exhaust thats for sure. I've had a maxima with leaky studs and a VG truck with no exhaust or at least very little, so im used to what the exhaust leaks would sound like, plus i just put a warpspeed y pipe on within the last 3 months. also when i pop the oil filler spot on the valve cover it gets louder so im sure its in the valves or something, guess its time to pay a little visit to my friends at Nissan of Keene...

THanks
