just got a Gtech

came in the mail today. diddnt realize how small this thing is. tried to do a quick horsepower run but the rain wasnt helping my cause between all the sliding i maxed at 162. however when it asked for the weight of the car how heavy is this thing. i looked at the sticker on the door and the GVW was over 4000 lbs ? is that right are these things really that heavy ?

No, I think our cars tip the scales at 3200 or so. A 5spd that is. Not sure how much heavier the auto is.

GVW is how much weight the car can handle. According to Edmunds our cars weigh 3129#... but I think they weighed them with an auto because the manual tranny weighs much less. The 1991 Maxima SE is listed as weighing 3029# on the Edmunds site which makes me think that one was weighed with a manual tranny. 100 pounds difference seems a bit hard to believe though.

I'd be interested in knowing how accurate those are. It would be great to be able to get accurate 1/4 mile times before and after mods. Does it measure the whp just from the acceleration g's?

they're not great on the accuracy but it's good for comparing things and testing the car before/after mods

on a strait backwoods road i dialed the car in at 3200 lbs, zeroed the meter out and pulled 210 horsepower. How acurate that was i dont really know. 1/4 miles times to come from Gtech.

210 might be a LITTLE bit higher than what it is

i only use mine for 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times and it seems to be very accurate

yup.. as craig and MrGone said, just make sure you use the same stretch of road, and it's fairly accurate for gauging improvements, but not exact for a real mesaurement.
i.e. the Gtech may say you run a 14.5 quarter, which you know is wrong because you ran a 15.1 on the track the day before..... but if you bolt on an intake and it says you now run a 14.3 on the same stretch of road, then most likely you'll drop your "real" 1/4 time by 0.2.. make sense?

do they do lateral Gs also?

turn it sideways and you have lateral G's....

now if I can just find an area or something to measure that part... how exactly do you measure it? (ie. time for a Matt's lesson of the day)

I well I just meant ingeneral, I know I could search google, but I figured I'd ask the inhouse expert on turning (and stopping, and going, and stereos, and .....)

(btw, noticed a bunch of "___________________________________ . [/lock thread]" action today. )

some days are worse than others.
I spent a lot of time on the computer today doing research for some stuff, and I wasn't in a really good mood.

guys, the hp function of the gtech is the one thats the easiest to get inaccurate. you need a very close to exact weight number to get even close to accurate on that reading. also, the weights given by the factorys are dry and empty, meaning theres no fluids in the car and no passengers.

if you take into account a 1/4 tank of gas, an engine and radiator full of coolant, an engine full of oil, etc youve got around 50 lbs just in fluid. in a full tank you're talking close to 100.

so lets say with a full tank you're talking 3300. add yourself and your clothes (usually around 10 lbs) in there, and say youve got 3500. at 3500 lbs on the same run your gtech probly wouldve read closer to 185-190, which sounds a lot more accurate based on the mods. got subs? theres another 70lbs etc etc. it adds up. cars with sunroofs weigh like 40 lbs more than other, autos another 60 lbs, etc etc.

thats not an exact how to or anything but im just saying that you need to be real close on the weight to put any value on the gtechs hp reading.

the 1/4 mile and 0-60 are pretty darn accurate on a good road, having been zeroed correctly, it should be within a tenth and definitely within 2.

even more important however is the consistency. they are extremely consistent between runs, so you can really gauge before and after results from mods/changes really well.

ive been enjoying mine for a good long time, just try not to drop it/ smack it/ crush it etc, it is tiny and easy to break if you are not careful.
