SES flashing: how to replace ignition coil
SES flashing: how to replace ignition coil
I searched how-to and newbie thread.. not able to find useful info.. so appreciate your help..
Dealer shop told me my SES light flashing is because of ignition coil failed (they call it multiple cylinder misfire) and want to charge me $650.. Too bad my car is 37K now, (1k over warranty), so Nissan won't cover it.. I am trying to decide should I do it by myself or allow those dealer rip-off... if I do it myself, can someone give me a link for the write up for how to replace it by myself? (like what tools do I need etc)
for the worst part, I purchased security plus plan which claims to Mechanical Breakdown only and dealer interprete coil failure as tune-up issue and thus not cover it either!!
thanks for your help.
Sherwood.

item. Have them show you where in the service schedule there is
something about checking the coils or replacing them. Also, not only are
you only 1K out of warranty, the ignition coils should be covered by your extended warranty -- check the brochure they gave you when you
purchased the plan. It will list the items covered/excluded. You didn't
mention which plan you have, but here's the list of excluded items for
the Gold plan. I seem to recall the list was the same for each plan but
the extra benefits such as towing, rental cars, etc. differed:
Maintenance services, tires, wheel balance and alignment, battery, spark plugs and wires, fluids (unless required with covered repair), belts and hoses ( belts and hoses are covered under Security + Plus Gold Preferred), wiper blades, A/C recharge ( unless required with covered repair) and/or conversion of the A/C system to operate on R-134, lubricants and filters (unless required with covered repair), disc brake rotors and drums, brake pads, MacPherson strut inserts/shock absorbers, clutch friction disc and pressure plate, throw out bearing, audio equipment, lenses and bulbs, sealed beams, carpet and upholstry, trim, moldings, glass, bright metal, wheel, body sheet metal, exhaust sytem, paint and rust, squeaks and rattles, water leaks, wind noise, any component of an electrically powered vehicle, any and all in vehicle communications systems and/or navigation systems, air bag sensors, and all items not covered by the Nissan Limited Warranty or Emissions Warranty.
Even if you find that coils aren't covered, call Nissan USA and
politely B**TCH. The fact that you are only 1K out of standard
warranty AND have an extended service plan should go a long way.
I'd be very surprised if the didn't offer something (partial coverage, etc.).

must first remove the coils. It is a fairly simple process for the coils. Seems like a 10mm socket, and an allen head to remove the front cover over the 1,3,5 cylinders. Try this guys site out..http://www.nissanx.net/tanman/. (Thanks Jay) He has some pics with his how too..I would look at the plugs. If you have had bad coils you could have fouled plugs as well.
