Question: Should revs drop when put into D or R?

My 00 Maxima is my first car so im not really sure if this is usual but when I turn my car on in park the revs stay at about 1100-1300 and when I put the transmission into D or R it goes down to 800. Is this supposed to happen? Kinda a stupid question but it just seemed weird...

Yes that happens, especially if you just started your car in the morning to warm it up.

Give it a few minutes to warm up if possible. It's not good to shift your car into gear while the RPM'S are that high.

Thats the thing, I do let it warm up, its usually starts at 1300-1400 in P and I let it go down to 1100-1200 but it doesnt go down anymore until i start to drive it around and then put in back in park.

How long do you usually let cars warm up? I usually do 3-4 minutes

i let mine idle for about a minute and keep the revs under 3k til the temp gauge has come up and sustained for a little while.

3-4 minutes should be fine, unless it's really cold, the rpm's shoud be down after that amount of time. After you drive it for a while what are the rpm's if you go to P or N?

Your idle is a little too high. It should be in the 650-700 rmp range once the engine is warmed up.

That seems high, I have an 03 auto and it idles in gear around 4-5k. Mabye some BG44 fuel injector cleaner, cleaning the throttle body, if those don't work I'd take it in to have it checked. Good luck

Your idle is too low...Are you sure you read the needle correctly?

Eh?? 4-5K (as in thousand idle!!) ?!?! That can't be good...

I'm sure you meant to say 4-5 "hundred" RPM is where it idles...
