auto transission... shifting 1,2,drive or drive?

does anyone have any thoughts on if it is smarter shift from 1st gear to second gear, and then drop it into drive, or start out in drive with my auto GLE?

Keep it in "3", and leave the manual shifting alone man. I know guys who do this, and trust me is it embarassing when you hit the rev limiter and end up getting crap times. The AUTO trans will shift fine by itself.

But if you need to experiment, do couple runs letting tranny do its thing, and couple runs manually shifting. Shift at 6300 rpm, so by the time the tranny shift into next gear, you are right before red line.

yeah.. but if u manually shift.. i think u can hit a little higher on the rpms....
if u let it autoshift... it leaves a lot to go before redline when it actually shifts...

You can get deeper in the RPMs manually shifting. I've always manually shifted my car at the track and thats the only way I get it up to redlinge (or a bit beyond). My fastest times were done this way.

Thats sorta interesting, and I really hadn't noticed where the trans shift at WOT. So you mean to tell me my 14.76 (2) and 14.78 could potentially have been 14.6x's ? I feel like such a sucker. Anyway, one more thing to consider when I go to the track come this Spring. Thanks.

well possibly. The 3.5, from the dyno's I've seen, keeps hp close to peak up to redline, so I feel its better to let the engine rev all the way, then drop it into 3rd, where you'll land somewhere around 4000-4500 RPM, at which HP is lower than at redline. Also, letting the car get all the way to redline gets you a few MPH faster, so when you do drop into 3rd, the RPMs are higher so more HP is bein made. Here's a dyno to examine yourselfs. Looks like gettin up to redline is good right?

Note: the red curve is after Technosquare ECU flash, thats why the HP curve continues past 6600 RPM or so. The blue is for a Maxima wiht intake and exhaust, so it probly breaths a little better up top than a completely stock Maxima

starting in 2nd doesnt mean anything really. you still start out in 1st gear, which lasts till like 45 or so, and if you're in 2nd, then the tranny will shift the same as if its in drive. no difference at all
