96' Max SE Vs. 2000 Mustang

I was just woundering, Who would win in 1/2 mile RUN, a 2000 mustang (base model) or 96 max (SE). Both are stock and autos, except for the max, has a K&N cone air filter on it. My sister who has a mustang is always ragging on my max, saying that her mustang would burn me, i dont think its true.....or is it?

Bummer, I'm only curious. Its safer asking the questions rather than me going out and finding a mustang to race.

you mean V6 by base model?
if that's so, you'll take her.
But why post, just do it.

Your sadly mistaken believing all V6 mustangs have a 4700rpm redline. Take a leap back in time to 1999 when they introduced the 3.8L OHV V-6 with 190hp @ 5250 rpm/220lbft @ 2750 rpm. Pit that up against a 190hp @5600rpm and 205lbft @ 4000rpm 3.0L maxima with similar weights and you have a drivers race pal...

And just because a car has a low redline doesnt mean anything. That 3.8L was designed to only peak out at around 5200rpm, just like a honda 2.2L s2000 is designed to peak out at 8300+rpm....

That's incorrect! The Mustang Coupe (V6) is rated at 193 @ 5500 HP and 225 @ 2800 torque. I'm not positive about the redline but I think it's 6250 RPM.

A low redline means alot. Think about it, with a 5800 RPM redline, the gears have to be made longer so you don't have to shift all the time. Higher revving engines can get away with shorter gearing which in turn multiplies the torque even more. Let's say a car with a 8000 RPM redline reaches 60 at the top of 2nd gear. A car with a 4000 RPM redline and the same gears would have to shift 2 times as often to get to the same speed. In order to shift the same amount of times as the other car, the lower gears have to be made twice as long. And longer gears equals slower car.

Thats not what he meant by redline not meaning anything. He meant that just because a car has a low redline, it doesn't mean its slow. At least thats what I got from his statement.

Well I hope that's not what he meant. If so, it is such a general statement it borders on useless...

That is what i was getting at.

But i do see your point about longer gears. It still doesnt necessarily translate to a slower car...

i just wanted to know something, (sorta off topic). why is it that american engines are so much larger than japanese/euro engines but do not put out as much power.(mustang 3.8L engine at 193 or so HP compared to 350z 3.5L engine at 280 or so HP) Is there something im missing, im just guessing they have poor engine designs or something, i jus find it unbelievable. My friends grand am gt has a 3.5L v6 engine and it cant even hang wit my stock 2.5L SE-R 4 banger, or the max for that matter.

If I'm not mistaken the v6 stang runs a low-mid 16, so you shouldn't have any problems unless your knock sensor is dead or something like that.

If you understand how horsepower is derived from torque it is quite simple. They are designed with low-end torque in mind and do not breath as well as revs rise as most of them have a 2 valve/cylinder configuration. If torque drops off at higher revs, the HP value will be lower since HP=RPM*torque/5252. Simple mathematics, the lower the numerator is, the smaller the end result.

Thanx for clearing that up for me man, i really appreciate it , im sorta new to the whole thing about engine designs and the scientific way they are supposed to opperate

You obviously missed my post stating the 99s were enhanced, and are not the same slow V6 stangs pre-99...

99-up V6 stangs run in the 15s people, 5speeds that is....

Also I've downloaded a clip of a GTP vs 350z vs Maxima 00 and the GTP whooped on all of them..(WTF??? I thought atleast the 350 would be giving it a good run)...... Check it out and tell me what you think, these clips are on KAZA, just type maxima in the search for videos

I've beaten a stock 00ish mustang auto couple months ago in my auto 96 max with custom catback and exhaust. It was really REALLY close. We had to race three times to be sure. (inconsistent with torque braking). I beet him twice.
If you're completely stock, I'm not sure man.

NEVERTHELESS, what a rush. I love close races.

A lightly modded GTP will run low 13s all day, EASILY... and since it is an auto - just stomp and go - no driver or skill needed. The 350Z can't compete with that, stock.
