Buying an intake, but which one?

Hey guys need some help.
What kind of intake should I get for my 96 Max? There are a couple on ebay, but has anyone bought one of these? And if so, how has it worked for you? I will be adding a Greddy exhaust in the spring, so I want something that's going to sound great plus give me the most hp for my buck. I was thinking about Stillen and Injen intakes, but before I made a decision, why not ask people who know. Thanks for the help.

I jsut bought a 98 max and it had a stillen intake on it already. Man it sounds like a "race car" as many of my friends have told me. I love hearing it expectually in 2nd and 3rd gear at WOT. Has a great mean growl to it. Lets you know u have that VQ30DE under that hood. Friends tell me you can hear it from down the street. It give you both from both world. It keeps quiet at low rpms but when u want that growl give it a little gas and it will tell u there is muscle in there. Even with the stock radio turned full blast i can still hear it at WOT. Good luck.

I don't have an intake, but I'm seriously considering Stillen or Place Racing...but possibly a Budget CAI to go with my Budget Y pipe.

Thanks for the responses.
I see some cars have the cone intake and some have the pipe that disappears down behind the bumper. What's the difference?

nismax96, the intake that disappears down the bumper is a CAI (Cold Air Intake), a CAI in general is more efficient than a normal Intake because it gathers air from where there is minimal engine heat. Injen, Place Racing, and Cattman make a CAI for the maxima. Expect to may more for a CAI and have a more difficult time getting it installed. Another drawback from the CAI is the fact that if submerged in water, (since it is relatively close to the ground) your engine will take in water - and that will cause a whole world of trouble.

Definitely don't want water in the engine. I'll Play it safe and go with the stillen. Do you know how much hp the stillen gives?

while we are at the subject, can anyone tell me why injen intakes are so much more expensive than others? is it because they are polished or because they actually do "suck more air in" ?

i dont think intake alone would give u any power because it will be restricted at headers and even if u got headers then u need exhaust to let it out. so unless u got all 3, ur not getting any hp. am i correct?

Cause they look pretty. From what I hear the hacked air box is the smartest choice.

No you are not correct. Reason being is that you don't know if your exhaust can outflow the amount of air going into the engine. For instance: Say your exhaust has a max flow of 600cfm (just a figure I pulled out randomly) but your stock intake only draws in 300cfm. If you put an intake on to raise that to 500cfm, your exhaust can still handle the extra air coming in/out and you make more power.

hmmm, smart. i really love the injen cuz of looks. i'll be in market for intake this month. i still cant decide if i should get a CAI or just a regular intake. i dont see any exhaust system/ headers going on my car in the future so im having a hard time deciding which i should buy. a regular intake for sound/ save money or injen to show off the looks and enjoy the sound. but then the injen might suck up some water!!
