Can you use a 235-40 18 tire with a 18x7.5" wheel, or is it to narrow of a wheel? Would it bulge out over the wheel?

You probably could...but it is definitely not recommended by any tire experts out there. The beads will not fit properly. Less sidewall = less tolerance when it comes to bending. I was in your situation before & opted to go with the pros' advice. The good thing is that 225/40/18 is a thinner tire which IMHO looks better.

 

I have 18 x 7.5 Before I purchased my tires (225/40/18), I called tirerack. They recommended 215/45/18 or 235/40/18. With 235/40/18 will be almost the same ride height (25.5" stock vs. 25.6" with 235/40 tires. When I went to a turner shop (Auto Design Haus) in Boston they said while 235/40 is the most accurate tire, the 225/40/18 will be safe to use in case you lower the car. 10 mm is not a big difference in width. So that is what I got. Hope this helps!

18" Racing Hart C2 evolution series with 235/40/18 nitto 555 on a 98 Maxima GXE. No problems with clearance even if i cranked my ground control springs all the way down. All you have to make sure is you get the correct offset on your rims.

 

A few months ago, I was doing research on how big of a tire/wheel combo I could fit underneath my unmodified 4th Generation 1999 Nissan Maxima. It is a late 1999 SE Limited Edition and came with the 16" wheels (16x6.5" JJ with 1.38 offset) on 215/55R16s.

Most responses I saw suggested widths no larger than 235mm. For those like me who wanted a beefier (wider) tire that is similar to the 5th and 6th Generations, I worked with my local Discount Tire store and ended up putting Drag DR-19 Wheels (Chrome 18 x 7.5" w/ 40mm offset) on Yokohama YK520s that were 245/45R18s.

There is very little rub as shown in the photos below and I think it looks like better than the original narrower and shorter tire/wheel set-up.

So if you've been thinking that 245/45R18s are too big, think again.

 

I rubbed when I had 225/45/18s (see sig) a few of times when I turn while going up a driveway... Because I only had the tires on for a few months...

Now that I got 235/40/18s I still rub when I take turns quickly.

 

im using a 235/40/18 on my 7.5 wide rims..... looks good!!! rides nice no rubbing !!

 

Yes, you can! The 6th Gen SE run 18x7.5" rim with i believe 245/45/18
or 245/50/18 tires. I'm in a 5th Gen with 245/40/18 cause the 235/40/18 were too rough due to smaller sidewall and looked kinda wimpy!

 

i have a 98 maxima with teins spring on kyb shocks. my rims came off a 03 maxima 17inch rims with 235/50/17. my right tires rub on the same spot as yours. i dont know how to resolve that issue. that happens only when i turn my steering all the way to the left. do you guys have an solution to this?.. should i get 215 tires?

buy the correctly sized tires. 235/50 is too big. 225/50/17 or 215/55/17. Or if you want 225/45/17 will suffice if you want a bit smaller tire if your slammed.

IMO i would go with 225/45/17.

tires size on currently is 225/50/17

 

if u are running 17s ur profile needs to be 45 or 40, that will also keep ur speedo accurate, so 225/45/17

yeah .. i also have the same problem. im riding on 225/50/17 on 03 max rims and its rubbing on the right side. i was told to get spacers instead of changing the tires. would that idea be better.. any answers would be appreicated.. thanks

I think the answer is no. 8" is the minimum for a 235 for every tire I've used/shopped....

 

same words , i think 215-225/40/18 on 7-7,5 max. i have 8,5 i use 225/40/18 and back 23-255/35/18,

245 is too much front..or u must change wheel with lower ET.
