? on Suspension Techniques springs install

Was helping a buddy yesterday and would like to confirm that the dash mark on the springs indicates the top of the spring - not the bottom. Also, anyone noticed that the end of the spring doesn't end up where the factory manual indicates that the oem spring should end up at in relation to the upper strut mount housing outer mark.

I think the bottom of each coil springs has tighter/closer coils when compared to the top of the spring
