I have a 92 GXE. This high-pitched squealing noise is coming from under the front hood. To me it sounds like a squeaky belt, if thats the term to use. If anybody's seen the movie "The Tin Drum", think of the little German kid right before he starts bangning his drum. This didn't really bother me over the winter, but the weather's getting nice and you can hear it through the moonroof. Anyway, sometimes it only starts up when the car's idling, or stopped at a stop sign.

Basically, does anybody have any suggestions on how to diagnose this or fix it before I take it to the mechanic? I can change the oil and do other minor work, but I'm not a mechanical whizz by any means.

Any help would be great.

Check your belts. It could possibly be the timing belt (since its a GXE). Also, there could be a leak in your exhaust system. If the noise tapered off when the car warmed up I would think its exhaust. Take it to a local mechanic for a free estimate and check it out while its on the lift. Have them find the problem then fix it w/your buddies. Works every time.
