What would cause the knock sensor to go bad?

I have seen many people talk about replacing the knock sensor. I was wondering why the knock sensor would go bad. Currently I have 56k on my car, and I am not the first owner, but I always use 93 octane gases. Anyone thinks that in future I have to replace the Knock Sensor, Please if you know the answer explain it. Thanks.

i heard from a mechanic that if you hit the engine hard with a hammer, the knock sensor will go off. i guess something like that would. he said they don't really go bad, just give off codes. a lot of people change them though, so i'm not sure who's right.
