P0420 and reprogrammed ECU but no help!! Now need a $1000 Catalytic Converter! HELP!
Since the 80/80 warranty doesn't cover the catalytic converter, I have to get a new one. Dealer quoted me $1000 for a new catalytic converter. NO WAY. What other alternatives do I have? How is Random Technology? I know it is cheap but will it be clean and pass emmissions?
Who has the Random Technology catalytic installed?

i do not have any personal experence with rt cats but every post i see about is negative. they fall apart and fail within a year or two. again, i dont have one so i cannot say for sure. my advice would be to contact NNA. i was under the impression that the main cat was covered under the federal warranty. 1-800-NISSAN1

I dont see why the 2k2 exhaust wouldn't fit on your 2k.

cat converter advice
As much as Nissan would like to convice you that the catalytic converter is not covered under the 8yr/80k warranty, it absolutely is. I had the exact problem. My P0420 code came up at around 72k. Had the ECU flash with no result. I did my own code pull with the OBD 2 and found the cat to be the problem. Nissan said it was only covered under the 5y/50k. My warrany book said 8k/80 under FED or CALI emissions. 1800Nissan1 played the same song and dance. How I finally got satisfaction is that I wrote a letter to the california/Fed EPA and gave them copies of the work and names that I talked to at Nissan1. 4 weeks later , surprise!! I got a call from Nissan1 saying they were mistaken and the cat is covered under 8yr/80k. Now I have a new catalytic converter and had the ECU flash reimursed to boot. Gotta love the EPA!! Make sure you don't have any aftermaket intake. The dealer tried to pull "the cat failure is from the intake" excuse. Good luck. If all else fails I hear the radom cat fixes the problem. But you have to drive the car a bit to warm it up before it passes inspection.

Wow, thanks for all your help.
Anyhow, I replaced the stock cat with Random Tech and guess what!!! NO CEL LIGHT! I was right. I'm always right. Got 4-5 more hp and car is running awesome. I hate the P0420 code. There was a reason why they changed the cat in the original TSB. Punks.

And there is no way in hell that I would pay like a grand for a new Cat from the dealer.

1. Totalpckge is right. First is the problem of a reprogramming that needs to be done. It does cost between $80-100 and takes about 1 hour.
2. HOWEVER, there is another reason for P0420 to come out. The catalytic converter has gone bad. I had the dealer look at my car twice before I realized that the cat went bad. They "reprogrammed" twice before they wised up to actually testing the cat. The cat failed and needed to be replaced.
I was quoted $950 for the new cat and install. I laughed in their face and said, "See Ya!!!". I check online and found Random Tech. THis is warrantied for 3 years and got decent reviews. I ordered it and it immediately corrected everything. It passes EPA (which is important for all you "cool" people going for test pipes and straight pipes) and won't kill my infant son and other people. BTW, straight pipes only give less than 3 hp.
I paid for the install for $40 at a local shop. Total cost $240 including install, shipment and cat.
I'm always right.

You did much better than I did. Mine came on with this code at 58k. Reflash of ECU only worked for a short while. Drove the car with the light on, then off, then on, then off...... until 78k. Was told 'pre-cat' had to be replaced for $1,000. I argued with dealer and 1800NISSAN1 that warranty book said converters were covered for 8/80. They both insisted, not the "pre-cat", but Nissan paid for 50% of the repair. Now at 95.6k and light has not come back on.
