2k2 SE Lighter than 97 SE

Went to the scale today and weighed my new ride.

2002 SE 3393 lbs including driver (180)

97 SE 3417 lbs including driver (180) I think I weighed the same

Difference 24 lbs. Not much but still surprised its less.

I went out of my way to go back to the same scale that I weighed the 97 on as well. Also had 1/2 tank of fuel both times.

My 95 GXE is 2998 lbs including driver (180) race ready after lightening, so I have my work cut out for me. 400 lbs is a lot of weight to remove and I am not sure its possibe doing the same stuff I did to the 95 but thats my goal.

I swapped the rear struts today (Illuminas) and there are a lot more steel supports etc in the trunk/back seat area than the 4th Gen as well as extra seat belt supports. Plus the rear seat is a lot heavier because of the fold down feature that requires extra support.

That's completely strange because the 1997 4th gen only weighs about 10lb more than the 95-96 4th gen. My 5 speed 96 with a moonroof, power seat, Bose, spare, jack, 30lbs of tools, 25lb of sub frame connectors, and 1/2 tank of gas weighed in at 3240lbs with me (190lbs) in the car. My car was weighed on a certified CAT truckers scale. The DMV lists my car's dry weight at 3005lbs. It just doesn't make sense that your loaded auto 97 weighs over 3200lbs unless it had about 150lbs of dead weight in the trunk. I've never heard of a 4th gen coming remotely close to that and everything I've read says the loaded auto 4th gen is a 3045-3080lb car. Your 5th gens weight is dead on correct though.

Thats one phat bish. My 97 feels heavier than my 92, maybe the weight is a myth.

Both times I weighed, the cars were absolutely empty of anything but what came with the car.

The only difference in options is that the 2k2 has no sunroof or leather.

It is also a certified scale and like I said I went back to the same one.

It is also the same one I weighed my 95 GXE on that came in at 2998 with me in it, so I don't doubt its accuracy.

Well my 97 SE was a pig compared to the 95 GXE. The 95 ran .8 faster in the 1/4 (14.6 vs 15.4) using the same mods and same engine/transmission. (I swapped the 97 motor and trans into the 95 because of the LSD and low mileage) I did do some more lightening on the 95 but probably in the neighbourhood of 200 lbs.

Jime: so where did you have your car weighted? Seems like it would be something interesting to pursue...

I weigh it at a government trucking scale in Newmarket ON and its too far for you to drive from Seattle. But you are welcome to come anyway I will buy you a beer.

I found out that if you talk nice to them they will let you weigh your car.
