No more NAV safety message!! Well, I still have the message, I just don't have to deal with it anymore. My alarm does it for me. I was getting really tired of hitting "enter" each time I started the car up. So, I pulled the NAV switch panel, soldered a set of wires to the "enter" key circuit (after a bit of testing with a meter to find the correct two traces on the board), and wired these two up to a relay triggered by the lock pulse from my alarm system. My alarm has auto locking which hits a lock pulse 5 seconds after you start the car. This turns out to be the perfect time to slap the "enter" key as well.
After looking at the switch they used for the "joystick", I'm glad I did this. I don't think that thing would have 100k miles worth of "enter" key pushing every time I start up. To see what I mean, those of you with Nav just pull the joystick handle off the switch shaft and look at how tiny it really is!

Yeah, the rolling lockout is my next attack. It might be difficult in the OEM system because it seems to be keyed off the gyroscope sensing motion. I could be wrong, but it goes into wide open mode if you just stop at a stoplight. No putting it in park required. As soon as you start to drive, it goes back into rolling lockout. I will be getting the service manual online soon and will check out the schematics to see if it is keyed off the speedo or something else, but I doubt it.
I owuld rather push the button 1000 times than ride around with one of the doffy Garmin things on my dashboard! Great Idea putting it on your alarm... Average joes definately cant do that. You should start charging for the service I am sure alsot of people are sick of pushing enter not just with the max!
I have a question. When you pulled the nav out where you able to get to the plastic screen covering the nav monitor. I would like to change that piece of plastic out with a coated piece of polycarbonate, which will be clearer and can be cleaned without any scratching or clouding.
If so, can you go step by step on how did the unit to get plastic screen?
Thanks.

On my 1 mo old Max, there is no cover attached to the panel. Only the screen itself with no additional layer of "cover". I did not have to remove the screen to do my mod, so I'm not sure if the screen has a removeable cover or not.
IF your Max has the cover attached to the panel though, you just start at the bottom of the console by popping the shifter bezel off, then the entire shifter panel. Once that's removed, you'll see 2 screws to remove that will enable you to remove the CD/Tape/Climate panel. Once that is popped loose, you will see two more screws that once removed will allow you to pry the Radio *****/Nav Screen cover/center vents panel loose. Work slowly and carefully to avoid scratches. The vents are actually attached to the panel, so you'll have to remove it all as one unit.
Nice mod!
Does the Nav lock you out when you are moving? I know the menus on the non-nav do. Seems odd that a Nav would lock you out.
I still think Honda makes the best Nav for cars, that thing was sweet... too bad their cars suck.

Yep, many of the Nav, and many of the "setup" features are disabled while rolling. That is another one that I want to attack once I figure out how they're doing it. Seems to be tied to speedo or gyroscope since you can access everything while you're stopped, yet in gear. Why couldn't they make it easy to mod by looking for the tranny to be in "P"

I know the Accord allows you to access it all the time. When I was test driving it, my buddy was sitting next to me bringing up strip clubs on the Nav

I am sure the next person that drove it thought it was strange... lol

Heh heh.... should have set them as "home" and "work". THAT would have been funny!

Actually, I've been following a thread over on Freshalloy by a few folks who have installed switches on their "VSS" speed sense wire at the nav unit. Works like a charm to bring back the menus, but DOES make the nav stop "moving". You have to flip the switch back to normal when you're done with the menus to get the nav back to normal. I think that the VSS feeds separately to the radio, wiper, and other circuits that use it, so this mod shouldn't affect those circuits. It appears that all Nissan units have the same connector on the nav and that the VSS is in the same position on all of them, but that they use different colored wires on different cars. Trying to find someone with the FSM for a Max so I can confirm which pin/color is the VSS. Once I do, and try the mod, I'll post here how it went.
