wheel bearings...how do you know which is bad?

my car makes massive hum, sounds like its coming from middle of car or rear. I dont want to buy all 4 new ones. Is there any way of like moving the wheel to determine which is bad?

i just jacked up my car & tried to move tire back & forth (towards the car & away from car)....if you can then you need wheel bearings.

I thought I had 2 bad wheel bearings....dealer said 3 ....oh well, fixed under warranty

wow, also i just finished speaking to Ken at JRNissan (these guys are great), he told me the back of our cars (4th gens) have to get wheel bearings and hub replaced but fronts just need wheel bearings replaced. I guess i'll go to local shop and have them jack up car and let them determine with a second opinion. What causes these ***** to go bad anyway? BTW backs are 80 something a piece, front is only 38.

yeah, 99% sure your bearings are going out. Hit any curbs lately, that's often causes them to fail really quickly, also just abusing the car (trying to do ebrake slides on dry pavement, hitting stuff lol, sometimes even big **** bumps/holes/etc can push them over the edge). Sometimes they will pass the whole shake/wiggle test, but still be bad, that happened to my car not to long ago.

The passenger side drive shaft carrier bearing can also go bad and hum. I'm suspecting that to be a problem with the wife's 2k Maxima.

Also, tire noise can get pretty loud, especially if you're down to the wear indicators.

**** man

see, u know what, i'm not even gonna order it. I'm going to find a shop to get it. So when they buy it and its not the problem, they go out of pocket and not me.

One question about wheel bearings, when I'm slowing down, I hear a humming noise coming from the front. Is this a sign of wheel bearings going bad?
