hesitates , spudders and stalls in heavy rain

hello,

i would like to know if anyone can help. i have a 93 se (v6-3000). The past 2 times of severe rain. the car was sitting in the rain over night. it would start up fine hesitate and spudder a bit. i would give it gas and it wouldnt spudder as much and eventually drive fine. now this morning after an all night rain, the same thing, hesitation , spudder then just stalled out. the car would crank and turn over fine, tried to start in nuetral same thing. after sitting in the car waiting for a ride the car started spudder abit but got me home. i left the car idling for a few minutes rain slowed down, got into the car and its driving fine.

could any one have an idea why this is happening. could it be a short or is water getting somewhere it shouldnt

You should check your distributer cap. I had the same problem last summer and when I checked the distributer, part of it was actually burned out. Replaceing it fixed the problem
Good luck

That's pretty strange. Are you sure it is only when it rains out? Does it happen when you actually drive in the rain and let it sit overnight or do you park it when it is dry and then it rains?

I had a similar problem this morning with mine. Unfortunately I don't have much advise to offer Sorry. BTW, if you have a 93 SE, you do not have a distributer, you have individual coil packs. I guess a good starting spot would be to see if any of them are cracked. Good Luck!

My GXE is hard to start after very heavy rains. Requires lots of cranking and a little use of the gas pedal to start it. Any ideas? (besides distributor)?

Sounds like a cracked Dis. cap or housing may be your problem. I would inspect your wires too!

Get the car warmed up and idling smooth then with spray bottle of water, spray the dist. cap, coil and wires, one item at a time. When the hesitation returns you'll know the problem. If you can't reproduce the problem with above try spraying any of the major wire harnesses (ie mass air etc)

Good Luck

You do really need to check or even just change the distributor cap and rotor and the plug wires while you are at it if you have not done it recently. I would definitely do the thing with the water bottle or you can check your plug wires to see if there is any "leaks" by starting the car when it is dark out and watch for arching, where there is a crack in a wire and it will arc to another part of the motor and ground itself out. I think the main problem would be the distributer cap itself though.

I had the same problem.
It wasnt the wires, or the cap or the rotor.
It was cracked vacume lines, so after wasting all the money on those parts, I bought $3.00 of vaccume hoses and replaced all the hoses and no problems now.

I'm having the same problem and someone suggested that it could be the O2 senser. When I looked at it the end where the wires enter the senser seemed to have a bad seal, so I gunked it up with HiTemp sealent and now just waiting for some wet weather to see if it worked....

The first place to start is to replace BOTH the distributor cap and rotor.

Does it seem to happen after you drive through puddles and water gets splashed up underneath the car? This happened to me about a 1-2 months ago. I was driving home from college in ridiculously heavy rain and I drove through a deep puddle... couple minutes later the car started sputtering/hesitating like it was gonna stall.

It just so happens that the next weekend I had plans to put in a new oxygen sensor. When I looked at the old oxygen sensor, I noticed that two of the wires going to it were completely exposed. I pretty much concluded that the reason why my car acted up in the rain was because those two wires were getting wet and shorting out and whatnot.

So I put the new O2 sensor in, and never had a problem in the rain since.
