whats the cause of steering wheel vibration at high speeds?

my steering wheel shakes at high speeds,,,anything more than 65MPH. i'm thinking ball joints, or tie rod ends. i know my struts need to be changed as well as my stock GXE suspension because i'm at 61K and it's never been changed before. any thoughts fellas?

Alignment could be off, too. You may also have warped brake rotors.

i woudn't say it's warped rotors unless it's happening when you're braking...
i had the same thing with mine...had balanced (decent tires) on it....
i bought new ContExtreme tires, put them on, and it disappeared...i have about 40% thread left on the new front tires & it's starting to happen slowly again...so I would definitely say it's the tires.

If you go for an alignment they will tell you if it is the ball joint.. they cant do the alligment if it is that. as for the balance it may be that a weight may have fallen off.. did you hit any pot holes since?

8k miles ago is quite a distance. i just got new tires mounted and balanced and they said bring it in after 5k miles for my rotation and balancing.

I'm having the same problem. Real bad shaking of the steering wheel, even the hood is shaking! I believe the Firestone dealer who mounted/balanced my wheels did a crappy job, I'm sure it needs to be re-balanced. My alignment is off too, its pulling to the left. You should check about re-balancing your tires. I think that's the culprit.

Well, I live in maine and our roads are extremely rough,,,pot holes, frost heaves, tons of hills, etc. My brakes are shot, and so is my suspension,,,I have a GXE stock suspension and currently has 61K miles on my car. I bought it used last spring around this time. I need new rotors and pads first, than suspension shocks and struts and tires too. How much are regular brembo rotors? I don't want to spend too much money on the cross-drilled rotors. I'm not looking for hardcore racing, I just want a nice, smooth ride like a Cadillac. My mom has a 2003 GMC Envoy and it rides like a DREAM, barely noticing anything going over bumps, pot holes, frost heaves, etc. It only has 10K miles on so the SUV is basically brand new. Thanks guys for the input!
