HELP! Speedometer just took a dump

I was driving my i30 the other day and all of a sudden the speedometer was acting like it was on crack. It keeps jumping up and down and every time i let go of the gas the needle drops to 0mph, when accelerating it shows the relative speed but jerks around alot. I havent checked the ECU codes yet, but if anyone has had this problem or knows what I can do.... PLEASE HELP ME!

97 I30t - 5speed

Thanks

maybe the cable is loose? Sorry I can't give you a better explaination, but I don't think that the speedo has anything to do with the actual computer. i could be wrong though.

i had the same problem when i replaced my gauges i was putting import intellegence intelleglow gauges on and had to pull off the needles(not recommended) And the speedometer worked but alway fell right back into 0mph
so i investigated and there is a coil in the gauges that acts like a spring and if that coil is f%$kd up then u r f%$d so you can take it off and c if it is a wiring harness but i be it just messed up that coil.
cant garuntee dats the problem but if it is u r f%$d.
You can get it replaced but it cost about as much to just replace it
u can but a new one at a wrecking yard but theyre hard to find.
hope dis helps

Your vehicle speed sensor might need replacing. If not, the wiring between the sensor and the guage cluster might be the problem. If not that, it might be the guage cluster itself. If i were you, i would check those items in that order.

Oh yea, check the ECU codes.

where is the speed sensor located? Thats what i suspect the problem is... but I have no clue where it is and if it is accesible enough so I can change it myself, I dont have the necessary tools to take the tranny out at my current location. If anyone can PLEASE send me a pic or atleast a description of where the sensor is it owuld be much appreciated.

Much Love

The VSS is on the driver side of the rear of the transaxle. It's attached with one 10mm bolt and can be reached from below.

Also, I needed a new instrument cluster about 6mos ago and they were running $45-50 from JY's here in Houston. Good luck
