Catalytic Convertor
Catalytic Convertor
My check engine light came on and autozone said that it was a catalytic convertor problem. I looked and no one sells a new catalytic convertor except nissan dealers. I looked at the jerry-rome site and they were 800 bucks. I looked on ebay and they have the (illegal?) high flow pipes for only 30 dollars.
Any advice on what I should do????

Most aftermarket cat converters are bad quality. The OEM cat costs around $800 but the honey comb "filter" element in there is superior to those sold in the aftermarket cats. If it was a cat problem maybe the O2 sensor is the culprit. If the cat is bad, it's most likely due to your car running rich and making the cat go bad. Get a new one and most likely it will go bad too and a lot faster than the stock one. Maybe 2 weeks time?
How about this:

I never actually bought one from them though I was thinking about it.

I don't think a malfunctioning cat would trigger the Chk.Eng. light because that's strictly a mechanical device. The O2 sensors are electronic and could trigger the light, but I thought they're sitting prior to the cat, so they "wouldn't know" if anything was wrong with the cat....
In any case there is something wrong with fuel supply/ignition/emission systems that triggered the light...
